A Few Bars of Cello Solo

At the end of a piece, I would like a few bars played by a solo cello–not the whole section.

  • If I just note solo cello in the score, the the playback engine will still give me a cello section.
  • If I had a player for solo cello, it sounds great, ut then the score is cluttered up with an extra staff that is only needed for a few bars.
  • I would not want a separate part printed. The part should be for the whole section but with those few bars marked as solo.

This could all be handled easily just by a note in the score, if it were not for the issue of the playback.

I am sure this has been solved before. Thoughts?

One solution is a score for the real orchestra and a special version just for audio export, but that seems clumsy,

Use Independent Voice Playback for your cellos. Notate the solo cello in a different voice (not used elsewhere) and route that voice to a solo cello patch.

Thank you. I don’t understand completely, but I will research that.

Select the solo passage and put it in another voice:

The B is selected. You can see it’s Up-Stem Voice 2.

The in Play mode, select the player and Enable Independent Voice Playback:

Then select the Up-stem Voice 2 and change it to Solo:

Appreciate all the help, my friend! I’m excited to try this. It will open up a lot of possibilitoes.

Hi @konradh, since you will need, I suppose, to assign possibly different dynamics to the Solo player, keep in mind that there is a particular workflow to assign dynamics to a particular voice when you use Independent Voice Playback: you need to enter the dynamics while the caret is activated, and the caret shows the desired destination voice (with the little orange note). Then you can open the Dynamics popover (Shift+D), write your dynamics and (very important) keep Option(Alt) pressed while you confirm the popover with Enter: so the dynamic will be assigned to the chosen voice. Here an old post with a detailed video showing this workflow (in case it could be of some help):
