I have a very simple question. Why does Dorico 5 Elements write a half note as two tied quarter notes? And how can I fix that? (I’m just a beginner)
It usually does this when the half note sits over the middle of a 4/4 bar – e.g. on beats 2 and 3. There is a common rule that the middle of the bar should be clearly shown.
The exact behaviour can be changed in Library > Notation Options > Note Grouping; but I don’t know if Elements has that.
Thanks Ben Wiggy. We have that in 5 Elements too, only it doesn’t work, or I’m doing something wrong. I select the note in question, but whatever I do after I press appley nothing changes. For clarity I have added a screen here about what problem I have.
In a 6/4 metrum the notation is correct, because a 6/4 is divided in two (dotted half notes) unlike a 3/2 which is divided in 3 (half notes).
However you can define the 6/4 as [2+2+2]/4 to get 3 half notes…
If the Notation Options don’t fix it; and you’re sure that it’s definitely what you want … then you can use Force Duration. Press letter O or click on the “G-clamp” icon. Every note you enter with Force Duration will be exactly what you specify.
Vadian is right that 6/4 is two compound beats. (The big brother of 6/8..!!) You might want 3/2 for the rhythms that you’re using, instead.
6/4 isn’t necessarily two dotted half notes; you may want to enter the time signatures as [2+2+2]/4 if you don’t want it to treat it as such.
Welcome to the forum!
Just to add to @Vandian and @hautboisbaryton, using the meter popover and entering [2+2+2]/4 will still display 6/4 on your music.

Yes, yes. But, if the input is one-off, I’d apply the solution given by @benwiggy (Force Duration or one-off 3/2 metre in one bar only).
This would preserve the value of time at 6/4 to continue the score.
Obiwan, it is not entirely clear what you mean by this.
Do you mean, it is one off the regular time signature? or
do you mean, it being a one-off (a singular occurrence)?
Pretty sure he means a one-off.
I mean one occurence only (in order to preserve the 6/4 time). My English is not good, sorry : my German is better.
The problem was solved thanks to your advice. I used Shift+M with the notation [2+2+2]/4.
Thanks everyone!
