In enter notation mode within a drum kit stave I can do the following:
-Scroll up and down to view the “natural” drums using the up/down arrows.
-Enter notation; (but only natural drums)
-Use Shift/Opt/Up-Down arrows to change natural drums to playing techniques (cross stick, open2 Hi hat etc)
What DOES NOT work is using Opt/up-down arrows to move between playing techniques as explained in the Tuesday Tips “Cycle Though Percussion Instruments” video.
How do I fix this please?
Just to confirm: you’re saying it’s not working with the caret active (which is where it is used)?
Yes. The caret gives me the names of the natural drums only …so I can scroll through these using up/down arrow with the caret active…kick drum, tom, snare, high tom etc…as is normal. Holding down opt/up down arrow has no effect.
Once I’ve entered a natural drum (snare or high hat) I can access playing techniques with shift/opt/up down arrows.
In summary the only way to get playing techniques is first enter the natural drums then change them; a time consuming practice.
Can you please upload a blank version of your project.
It works for me. I tested it on the Snare.
I activate the caret, position the caret at the particular line/space I want to cycle through (e.g. Snare), press Alt/Opt+up or down, and it cycles through the techniques.
Perhaps you omitted the “position the caret at the instrument position” step?
EDIT:
I just looked at your High-hat Playing Techniques. You have none assigned:
Hi there,
Thanks for your response.
It doesn’t work for me unfortunately. I’m not sure what you mean by “position the caret at the instrument position”…… I don’t see that occurring in this video….
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/nScFm83Br6
What Anthony does at approximately 10 seconds into this video does not work for me, on my computer set up….
Opt/up-down arrows do not result in changes between playing techniques. Surely this is a key command issue?
As far as the high hat setup goes; while it doesn’t appear that an open high playing technique is enabled in my percussion kit, it is…. the circle above the hi hat .and play back is enabled accordingly for “open 2”. However I’m unable to access this without first entering a closed hi hat, exiting note entry, choosing the note head, and shift/opt/down arrow to make it into an open hi hat.
If you take another look at the first few seconds of the video, you will see the caret being moved up and down the staff to each instrument. At 10 seconds, the caret is already on the snare drum space. It’s only when the caret is on the particular instruments line/space that the Alt/Opt+up or down will cycle through Playing Techniques.
Perhaps you could do a screen grab of what’s happening?
Now that I think about it I seem to remember something like this being default for High-hat. I could be wrong.
When I removed the Open 2 Playback Technique from the Percussion Map assigned to your Kit, the Open Playing Technique (the O) stopped being available to cycle through.
Hi Daniel,
Thanks again for your help.
Yes…I’m up to speed on the caret needing to be on the instrument in question in order for the opt/up - down arrows to take effect. But that is not happening on my computer. Here is a screen recording of me moving the caret up and down over the snare drum…firstly with just up-down arrows, and secondly with opt/up-down arrows. As you will see, the effect is the same…nothing.
The only way I can change from snare to rim to cross stick etc…or closed to open hi hat is to enter a natural note (snare or closed hi hat)…exit note entry mode and highlight the note head I want to change, and use SHIFT/opt/up down to cycle through the options.
Hope this helps.

I had some assistance in trying to change the note head of open high hat from an x note head with a small circle over it (the default) to an x note head with a circle around it. It was also extremely frustrating, as the changes I made did not eliminate the default (x with circle above) but moved the new note head to below the stave, where the hi hat with foot is supposed to be.
Yes…there is a default for open hi-hat playing technique just like there are for the different snare drum techniques…I’m just not able to access it through “alt-up/down arrow”.
Is there a better way to try and get these Dorico issues resolved? I’ve now tried the forum, the FB page and the email address to no avail multiple times over the past 2 weeks and I feel like I’m getting nowhere.
I assume Alt+up/down work in other contexts, e.g. to change the pitch of notes on pitched instruments? Have you made any customisations to your key commands? If so, try quitting Dorico, and via the Finder go to ~/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 5
and then temporarily move the keycommands_en.json
file out of the way, then restart Dorico. Without your custom key commands in place, do you get the expected behaviour?
This is the place to be (that was the Dorico Product Manager who just replied to you). Sorry that it’s taken so long. Hopefully you will have a fix shortly.
Yes…option + up / down works fine in those contexts…
I have made some customisations: I changed all my note values to the Finale equivalents. Another shortcut which was not functioning was the move to next bar (command + left / right arrow)…this would navigate to alternate Windows in my Mac…so I reassigned this command.
However I have no recollection of customising the commands in question…and to the best of my knowledge they never worked once I learned of the existence of natural drums, and playing techniques.
I’ve gone inside the Dorico 5 folder [~/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 5] and it appears to be empty, as in this screenshot…so I’m not quite sure where to find the keycommands_en.json
file
I opened a Dorico Diagnostics zip file from searching for the keycommands_en.json file : but as it was not in the folder you mentioned I don’t know where to move it from…
Cool. Trying to be patient.
Did you access the Library folder via your Username folder?
I’m not familiar with PC but I access mine from Muz/Library/… and not Macintosh HD/Library/…
FYI I’m on Mac…will take look now.
I assumed you were but didn’t want to assume you were.
I showed the full and correct path in my reply.
In the Finder, choose Go > Go To Folder and then in the little popup window that appears, paste in the whole of this line:
~/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 5
Be sure to include the tilde at the start of the line. That is a shortcut that means “your user account home folder”, which is helpful, because of course I have no idea what your user account name is on your computer.

Ok…so; I’ve accomplished this…I’ve duplicated the keycommands_en copy.json file, saved to the desktop and deleted it from here ~/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 5
Alt + up /down now work to scroll thru the snare drum playing techniques (which is great).
As far as the hi-hat goes; I’m still having issues with this. Opt + Up arrow WILL show me the playing technique (ie. Open 2) but there is no change in note head display ie. either to x with a circle over, or my preference which is x enclosed in a circle. I’ve followed Christian’s walk thru in the past to get this happening thru Library/Instruments/Edit Instruments etc…but there must be a step missing…
