Add instrument not available in list

I want to use Alto Flute in G but the instrument list only contains (strange enough) non-transposing alto flute. Can I create an instrument with transposition, and add it to the list?

(Yes I will update to a newer version… just can`t do it during a project…)

You’ll have to find another instrument in G, and change the name.

As ever, the answer is “Yes, in Dorico 5.”

That sounds unusual. I’m sure I have used alto flute in Dorico before, and when the score was set to transposed, the flute transposed as it should.

It was my understanding that alto flute was what’s called flute, usually… Maybe I need to study this again…

In Dorico 3.5?

Confusingly, the alto flute is sometimes called “bass flute” in British works. Alto flutes may have a straight or curved head joint, whereas the actual bass flute in C, sounding an octave below the regular flute, always has a curved head joint.

Yes, possibly even earlier. I was working on that particular section in Dorico starting in 2019. No problem using an Alto Flute for it, and none developed going forward.
