Adding a 1st & 2nd ending is not working

I’m trying to add a 1st & 2nd ending and clicking the ending button on the upper right is not working. I was initially able to add the 1st & 2nd ending but it would have repeated all the way from the beginning so I deleted it, then made the initial repeated section is 12 bars encased in the repeat signs, then tried to add the 1st & 2nd ending again, and it will not work. What am I doing wrong?

For one thing, it looks as though you’ve put a 1-bar repeat in the soprano sax right before the repeat bar. That’s the wrong tool. You need to select the bar(s) you want to be in the first ending and then press the Create Repeat Ending icon at the top of the right zone. You don’t have to have entered a backwards repeat first. Dorico will place a first ending over the bar(s) you’d selected and it will also have added a second ending.

Here are instructions for adding a repeat ending with 1.2 ending segments.

Ah ok… this may have been working all along, I finally scrolled up and saw that the endings are only on the top staff… my learning curve is going to take a while before I feel comfortable with this tool.

The repeat endings are system objects. You can show these over (eg) the strings as well as at the top of the score by using Layout Options>Staves and systems>System objects
