Adding layout-specific text

Is it possible to input staff text (shift+X) into a layout and it NOT to appear in any others? Rather than having to input it and then manually remove it from others?

I am working on a theatre score and need some scripted dialogue to appear differently in the vocal score (where it can just be block text) to the piano/vocal score (where I wish to break it into chunks and align with underscore).

At the moment I have engraved the vocal score as I would like it, and hidden all of those text inserts from the piano vocal layout. I’m concerned that adding the shift+X text to my piano vocal layout will immediately mess up the vocal layout, even if I go through and hide them all.

I’m not sure the most elegant workflow to achieve this. I had to prioritise the vocal score hence having already engraved it, while continuing to work on the PV and Full Score layouts.

Not automatically, to the best of my knowledge.

One of the great things about Dorico is that this shouldn’t happen.

If you have your Layout typeset a certain way and add some text: it will mess things up. If you then hide the text, the formatting will snap back to exactly the way it was before.

Also, make sure you use different paragraph styles for each of the two lyrics. This way, when wanting to hide them in a layout, you just select one and then use the Select More command to select all other text of that paragraph style.

Amazing, thanks for the quick reply. I’ve not used different paragraph styles before, how does that work?

You’re welcome.

Well, when you press Shift+X to create text, the default paragraph style is Default Text. But there are others such as Lyrics (for lyrics), Rehearsal Marks (for rehearsal marks), Bar Numbers (for….) etc. You could actually choose any of these when entering text.

You can also create your own. I have a custom one for click track information that is a particular font, size, with a border, and alignment. When I want to use it, I press Shift+X and then choose that paragraph style from the Text Editor.

Its 12:30am here in Australia and so I hope that’s not too confusing!
