Affect of Pre/Gain Shown In Meter Activity?

Is there a setting to get increase/decrease of pre gain to show in meter activity? Seems odd that the meter is unaffected by increases/decreases in pre gain.

These are Instrument tracks if it makes a difference.

Well, the higher the pre-gain the higher the level on the meter and vice versa.
Surely that is not what your asking, so maybe I misunderstand you.

Can you post some screenshots of the pre-gain and the meter?

Yes, Iā€™m asking why the meters are not behaving as you described.

I could show the pre gain set at 0db and the meter hitting -12, and another shot of the pre gain set at -10db and the meter still hitting -12. But it wouldnā€™t be more than that.

Sounds like this is not typical Cubase pre gain/meter behavior. Maybe I inadvertently changed a setting?

Sorry about that. I edited to clarify.

Is your global metering set to ā€œinputā€? I just tried it and with it set to ā€œinputā€ the gain changes arenā€™t reflected on the meter. I think this is wrong in the manual then.

Yes, global metering was set to input. Reselecting input now has the meters responding to pre gain.

Very odd.

Nope! Now the meters are back to not responding. Reselecting input no longer helps. This has to be a bug.

Well I suppose it makes sense if you want to measure the actual input into the channel. Gain could be thought of as the first ā€˜stopā€™ in the channel so it would make sense from that perspective if the meter is before the channelā€™s processing and thus also pre-gain.

If you are recording for example you might prefer to see what the input signal is before gain is applied just so you can keep track of the level thatā€™s hitting your converters. If you had the ā€œinputā€ metering tap a signal post-gain it could mean you could clip the converter and you wouldnā€™t see it if you then had gain set to -6dB or whatever.

I donā€™t really ever use input as a source soā€¦ just speculating or thinking (typing) out loud.

Everywhere I check says meters are post gain. And this would be consistent with other DAWā€™s default settings; at least the ones Iā€™m familiar with.

Johnny_Moneto can you confirm your track meters are post gain and responding to gain adjustments? If so, can you suggest settings to check aside from Global Metering?

Iā€™m having a similar issue.

Iā€™m working on a huge, 1,000 track template and am currently gain staging by adjusting the pre-gain levels on instrument tracks.

The vast majority work as expected, and gain changes I make are reflected in the meters, but a handful of tracks arenā€™t doing this. The volume is quieter or louder, but the meters stay the same. Even when gain is at zero.

Is there some setting Iā€™m missing somewhere? It appears to be completely random.
