After Project SAVE, Losing Alt, Ctrl, Shift, Mouse click drag, etc

Cubase Pro, Windows 11 Pro…

I still have single mouse click, scroll wheel, and other keyboard functions. It’s only the modifier keys and either mouse-over multiple selection on events or tracks just not working, or click and drag on any UI element.

This has been intermittent while trying to open older Cubase SL 3.x projects. I open, save as new version, totally close out Cubase. Then re-open and it seems to be fine…for a while.

Tried a multiple system restarts and same issue at random. Cubase is the only app that is having this issue. No other windows hiding and grabbing the keys.

It’s still occurring in this once old project that is now a full v15 Pro project. I have removed references to any old non-existent midi inputs or plugins. It does not happen right away. Whatever it is, takes a while to kick in…or could be very specific. Not sure what triggers it yet. I am going to create a diag version of the project with Steinberg only plugins and instruments and see if that helps or is part of the issue.

Most of the plugins are Steinberg, and all but one, Reason Rack, is Steinberg Instruments. I have disabled all VST2 plugins, as well, at this point.

As before, a full Cubase quit, wait for processes to fully terminate, then open the same project again, clears it. I am going to set a timer on next start, just to see if it starts happening about the same time.

I am also not getting any of the usual Cubase general system errors that something went wrong and has become unstable.

My first and last save triggered it. I saved as to create a new version of the steinberg only, and then lost all mouse dragging function as well as the usual symptoms. I don’t think time had anything to do with it, but 1:22 on my timer.

I am just going to email support…thanks.

Running in safe mode and disabling all 3rd party plugins has the same result. If I can send someone a copy of the project file only, I guess that can help narrow it down?

This was originally a Cubase SL 3.x project.

Turns out, It has nothing to do with that project or version 15. It’s also occurring on a pretty much scratch empty v14 project as well. My last attempt was just opening the project. I didn’t even make it to a save and had the issue.

FWIW, I can drag the actual cubase main window around and any of its main windows like mediabay. It’s anything inside the windows that are click>drag locked.

The VERY last time, was while saving a halion flexphrase preset. Nothing adds up…yet.

By chance did you also try deleting preferences in appdata/Steinberg/CubaseX?

‘strange’ issues are often fixed by that.

Actually, it turns out, that OneCommander does not play good with Cubase. There is an option that hooks or latches a folder history list to explorer windows or, in this case, save and load functions. Since disabling that, it’s been smooth. Thanks to Grok, it helped lead me in the right direction. I was not suspecting Onecommander at all and I should have, right off the bat, since it was file saving related.

OneCommander is a powerful tool, if wielded properly
