AI John Lennon ---> Beatles ("Grow Old Along With Me")

I don’t know … can I post a link to this in YouTube?

“Grow Old Along With Me”, AI Version

Amazingly good quality. When I found it today and listened, I didn’t know it was AI, and I had no thoughts that it wasn’t the Beatles (I thought it was another one in the Free as a Bird or Real Love cassette tape overdub discography).

I then went to the version on Lennon’s Milk and Honey album … I thought the AI version was miles better!

Amazing.

I don’t know … try it and find out?

You have a seriously strange fascination with the Beatles.

Don’t get me wrong. I love some Beatles things. But cheese and rice … they are not the only thing that ever happened in music history.

You always talk as if they are still performing and making music to this day. The majority of folks probably don’t care.

This recording is a ‘reproduction’ of what had been an original work - a work that came from the minds of two artists who had an asthetic of their own, which the AI reproduction does not imitate - And you prefer this version?

Must someone always bring religion into it?! What about politics?!

Well, this one seems to have taken a “political” turn recently …

The original work was just John Lennon, not two people. The AI remake had voices of Lennon and McCartney, as solo vocalists, and harmony singers. So you are right, it does not imitate the original

Mary Chapin Carpenter did a solo remake.

I like the AI remake the best of the three. I’m guessing by the fact you said the original “came from the minds of two artists” you hadn’t listened to any of the versions when you wrote that?

Hey Scab, buddy, what is the purpose of your post?

To encourage you to try new things without someone else telling you it is “okay” first.

Post the Youtube link?

I know. Things are scary sometimes.

Edit:
@alexis I know I can be a jackass at times. That is not my intention right now. Sorry. However, you might need some serious self-assuring thoughts in your life at some point …

Nice. I’m pretty happy with things at this end, but thanks for the advice!

Wow, without even trying!

Well, after further listening we do like this one best:

That AI Version is nevertheless unbelievable in its sound!

It’s both. This doesn’t use Generative AI like ChatGPT - John’s voice is John’s voice. It uses AI to separate & isolate the vocal from original recording. Basically the same task that was done to snag the vocal for Free As A Bird - only now they can use AI to do it with more precision. While similar to what SpectraLayers can do extracting vocals, the custom AI that Peter Jackson’s folks built has been heavily trained to distinguish individual Beatle voices - it can tell John from Ringo in a crowded room.

Sweet, thanks @raino .

As you said, I think, part of it (IMO) is completely artificial … Paul’s voice.

To my ears Paul’s voice sounds amazing. It was only after I read someone pointing out it was sung in his “Abbey Road voice”, which he no longer had in 1980 that I realized it was fake, i e., AI.

So one real voice you say (John’s), and one fake (Paul’s). Half a Double Fantasy!

(You know, comparing John’s vocals on the AI version to the one on the posthumously released Milk and Honey version … the 2023 voice is much *clearer than the one he used in 1980 singing into a cassette tape on top of the piano.

How did this random YouTube dude have access to the tools allowing him to do that, I wonder …?)

No, all the voices are real. Although I think Paul is a current recording. I saw an interview where Paul said that the AI was only used to extract out different bits of audio. Which makes sense, since the AI from Jackson was designed from the start to salvage audio from super crappy recordings and that’s pretty much all it can do. Their AI isn’t capable of creating new audio.

Unfortunately lots of folks are conflating AI in its totality with one of its sub-fields Generative AI the vaaaaaast majority of AI that is encountered in the real world is non-generative. But generative has been generating a lot of news lately 'cause it’s the new kid in town.

So when you see something about AI, don’t assume it is Generative AI

Oddly I haven’t actually heard the song under discussion. I’m moving my studio and at the moment only have a small radio for sound.

I wonder if we are talking about different songs? … you where Paul did recently sing onto an old John song (maybe “Now and Then”? … The Beatles to release final song using AI to isolate John Lennon's voice : NPR ), and me the one where youtuber Dae Lims " faked" Paul’s voice on John’s “Grow Old With Me” (AI Reimagines John Lennon, Paul McCartney Solo Songs as Beatles Tracks)?

I’m not posting a YouTube link because I worry it might be against Steinberg rules, but it’s easily found.

Thanks for the Generative vs. Non… AI discussion.

And good luck on the studio move! :muscle: :smiley:

I think you’re onto something
