Hi, I was trying to do some work while flying for 1-2 hours. MacBook Pro, Dorico 5.1 and…AirPods Pro 2 gen. What ever I was trying to do:
Changing output in Dorico from Default to AirPods Pro
Reloading playback templates
Restarting Dorico
Restarting my Hardware
Nothing helped. Everything was played on my Mac as usual - videos, Music app, but Dorico didn’t produce any sound.
I’ve seen/red few topics about this issue. There are huge tutorials about aggregate device etc. I was using well known Loopback.app. to simulate it. But even with this software which enables to manipulate a sound of your mac as flexible as possible - there was no success -Dorico doesn’t produce any sound if if choose as an output AirPods Pro.
ONLY ONE THING HELPED - changing a template to the Note Performer! I could suddenly hear everything Dorico plays back. Changing back to the defaults canceled a sound output again. It must be definitely a Dorico issue.
I would appreciate very much somebody from Dorico Team would give us clear instructions how to deal with it. Thank you in advance.
My experience has always been that with my aggregate device, if I put the airpods on, it works. But a friend of mine had a strange problem too, so I guess my experience is not a rule and there are complexities I can not understand.
Thank you Marc, anyway…I am just testing right now:
Logic - OK
Amadeus - OK
QuickTime - OK
Audio Hijack - OK
Dorico/NotePerformer - OK
Dorico/HALion Sonic Selection - WOW - there is a sound!
But why it wasn’t yesterday??? Same Hardware and software!
I wouldn’t write this post if it would happen for the first time…
the problem with the AirPods usually is, they appear in Dorico as two devices with the same name. One is for the right ear and the other for the left ear. What? Is that true? No, just joking?
True is, one is for the input (the built-in mic of the AirPods) and the other for the output (the actual earphone). Dorico does not have a concept of audio-in, just out. So if you choose the first entry (for the mic) Dorico has no output ports and will stay silent. Therefore you need to make sure that you always choose the second entry for the pods, the actual output device.
That hint with the aggregated device is a workaround which makes life easier with the pods, because once it is set up you don’t need to take care any more of in/output and or which of the entries to select.
Does this make things a bit clearer for you?
Hi Ulf, thank you for your answer. I understand a way you explain, any way why Dorico cannot be programmed in a way it separates those two entries? So a user just could choose then a right one.
Any way creating an aggregate device with Loopback.app is a much easier Task as Apple own solution. If I switch this device off or on - it makes no difference - Dorico DOES recognise my AirPods Pro in both ways. What I cannot understand - why it does function one day, and does’t after a while again. Same hardware, same macOS…Hm…
I created an aggregate device under Audio MIDI Setup and it works fine. Thank you Ulf. I would just wisch all other Dorico users would save time trying to figure out why it works or it doesn’t…At least in a future…
It’s not only a problem in Dorico but also in Cubase/Nuendo. Because they use all the same components that deal with the abstraction between Steinberg’s ASIO world and Apple’s Core Audio. And trust me, it is not as simple as sitting down and just programming it. If it were like that, we would have done already.
But it’s good that the workaround with the aggregate device is functioning.
Why it does not work sometimes: I don’t know for sure but to me it seems that it is a sample rate issue. BlueTooth devices usually support fewer choices of sample rates. So it could be that some other app adjusts the sample rate, then comes Dorico along and…yes, I know the expectation, but we cannot cater for everything.
Thank you Ulf. I was experimenting with sample rate as well. Not always successfully. Any way, I am sure I am happy one who doesn’t know how complicated it could be. I am sure Dorico team is doing their best. This is a best support ever I have had! Thank you for being for us here😊
