did have a way of assigning a keystroke to align hairpins but isn’t working now and
can’t seem to remember what the command to assign hairpin align. can’t seem to find it in a search

Ok, I assumed you meant vertical alignment. But you’re right. Grouping is horizontal, linking is vertical.
actually meant horizontal. oddly enough, seems to work on some occasions and not others. have to take the time to see what the circumstances are.
It won’t work if they are already linked elsewhere vertically. Sometimes you have to unlink them vertically before you can group them horizontally.
