I’d really like to know, what are your plans for Ambisonics in Nuendo.
Several posts with elder versions are available in the forum but still no solution from Steinberg. Today I found out that with the lates version V15.0.30, Nuendo doesn’t convert 1oA into 3oA. Just copies the channels from 1oA (AmbiX format) into 3oA channel width. This results in still 1oA with 16 channels where 12 channels are just empty audio channels.
Is this a known issue or is something wrong with my PC and I really need to re-install everything from scratch (including Win11)?
There are solutions from 3rd party available (like IEM or ab), but I’d like to know the intension and future planning of Steinberg in terms of Ambisonics in Nuendo.

If you’re not using any up-mixing plugins (I don’t think there is an Ambisonics up-mixer native in Nuendo), this is actually how it’s supposed to look. The 12 unpopulated channels are representation of the higher spatial fidelity, but since the source is only 1OA, there is none from the source. It would have to be either captured, created (through panning - you can use the standard multipanner), or synthesized (through up-mixing). The signal will play just fine on any Ambisonics playback system, there just won’t be any advantage in using 3OA, unless it’s combined with something else utilising it.
While I would appreciate Steinberg making some nice Ambisonics Up-mixer, from what i understood, it’s fairly complicated, and I feel there are many other areas of Nuendo to improve (like the native way the Ambisonics is rendered in headphones, for example) before we get to this.

Maybe it is different for Ambisonics, but one advantage of Nuendo is the channel conversion between different sound formats. So, I thought it will work the same way for AmbiX sound files, and it should, in my opinion (I’m usually using Mono/Stereo and use them in Ambisonics).
And the AmbiDecoder shows the channel conversion from 1oA to 3oA.
But as usual, it seems I have to find my own workarounds to get it working appropriate…
Just to avoid your confusion: Mono & Stereo is working correct (I’m working since many years with Ambisonics, so the process itself is not new for me…)
Ok, so we are talking about 1OA signal going through AmbiDecoder to 3OA group/bus?
If so, the meters you presented shows the correct behaviour. This is actually how you simply convert 1OA into 3OA, it will play correctly even when the channels 5-16 are silent, it will just not have the 3OA spatial resolution but retain it’s original 1OA resolution.
To get the 3OA resolution, you would need some way of synthesizing the additional spatial information from the source → Ambisonics Up-mixing (not just converting).
I suggest you check out AudioBrewers. The developer specialise in Ambisonics and has some new Ambisonics Up-mixer, from what I understand.
