An open plea to Steinberg

if you take a count of the posts here alone, the number 1 response is “fix broken, unfinished and buggy functions first”.

but it doesnt appear even in the top 5 of Steinbergs list? i call BullS*%t

Did you see this?

Basic sampler? Really?

I think steinbergians should first concentrate on internal things… Things that only they can fix/change/improve…

A sampler can be added from any company or third party… Paid or free…

Concentrate on the core program, not on silly accessories…

The whole exercise, sadly, was a farce. Steinberg’ reduced this thread’s essence to a borderline-irrelevant list of shiny features, entirely missing the point. There were a few useful workflow ones like window handling and mixer undo, but stuff like the sampler was very silly. If you asked people if they’d like a cat with the next version, I guess some people would say yes.

It was the wilful misinterpretation that irritated me. The whole point of he overwhelming support in this thread was bug fixes and core workflow / performance issues. Anyway, on a slightly more positive note, I’ve heard privately that Steinbeg understood this thread a whole lot better than they’ve appeared to from the public response and taken it on board. No way of really knowing until solid updates appear I guess. But their communication with us is extremely poor - there’s a 5 page feature request thread about getting rid of those window edge pop ups (or option to disable), which has had nothing but support for the idea, and it’s been completely ignored. Getting someone not from marketing to have some correspondence wth customers is something badly needed.

Yea, marketing guys are the worst to communicate with. And PR guys too. They live in their own shiny world, selling, selling, and what they sell is always the best… This forum would need somebody real from Steinberg, who knows things and can make a change. Marketing guys just promise and promise, even if they know they will not be able to deliver. If you raise questions, and they send you marketing guy or PR guy to communicate with you, you can know they don’t take you seriously, they just want to make you shut up and make it all look as nice as possible.

I am fairly new to Cubase (after 8 yrs using another DAW) and am quite happy with it so far but I understand the frustration that comes with unrequited bug-fix requests. As pointed out above, those of us who have already purchased the product are most interested in reliability, not bloatware and suboptimal VSTs. It is users, like yourselves, who to take the time to describe problems/issues in this forum that make a huge impact on reliability and I probably have you folks to thank for the fact that Cubase works as well as it does.

There are two points I wanted to bring up related to the above posts.

  1. The concept “The Cubase YOU asked for” can have some pitfalls. I watched for 8 years while my last DAW tried to be all things to all people and the result is, IMHO, a mess (the phrase “designed by committee” comes to mind).

  2. Based on my experience I would advise anyone who knows of a more suitable DAW for their requirements to spend the money and switch. I spent years waiting and watching while my last DAW headed off in a direction that didn’t suit my needs.

Edit: Just to make it clear, I am very happy with Cubase!
Cheers

My situation improved to " acceptable " once I moved to W10 and 8.5.15 from Windows 7 with 8.10…Also big improvement returning the multicore haswell chip DDR 4 PC asus motherboard x99, for the fastest i7 with DDR 3 I could get last summer in my specs now. Really a small step back in tech but better for Cubase.

The survey results were a disappointment but stienberg (sb) can’t go on record pronouncing otherwise in a formal survey, I don’t need sb VSTs, bells and whistles. I would still like to see better performance, Asio guard is problematic for many. The 8.5 midi enhancements and the new second cycle / auto punch record method are huge to me, I don’t consider tactical improvements as such, bells or whistles. Track visibilty still doesn’t work, please fix. Video export please.

Back to the recent posts, I would have left Cubase if not for the improvement above.

My system is very stable now. I attribute some of this to growing my analog gear collection ( ouch $ ) and doing more live acoustic recording, therefore less vst usage.

+1 Bump, workflow improvements, bug fixes, windows handling, far less clickety-click, click!

Very interesting thread. Being a newcomer to Cubase, I have an interesting observation - well, I think it is interesting anyway

I’ve used Cakewalk Sonar for years and switched to Cubase recently. You could pretty much take this thread, replace “Steinberg” with “Cakewalk” and “Cubase” with “Sonar” and put it on the Cakewalk forums. There have been very similar threads over there.

It is a difficult balance for a company to weigh new features that are required to stay competitive (and keep the doors open) and addressing long-time user’s real concerns. I get it. But user concerns need to be accounted for as much as is practical or they will move on. I moved from Sonar because it isn’t going in a direction that suits me. Lots of additional “stuff” like new plugins or themes but still behind on issues that matter to me (can you say “staff view”?).

On the other hand, we have some truly awesome tools at our disposal today compared with what we had even 10 years ago.

I moved from Sonar for exactly the same reason. My 2 years experience with Cubase has been quite good with not too much to complain about.

In theory there is a way to break the endless cycle of new DAW feature upgrades that are required to stay competitive, and instead focus completely on bugs and workflow.

But it would probably cost 3 times as much as Cubase.

Any DAW including PT is held hostage by casual users because that is where the money is at. But as this market expands, I can foresee a DAW that is designed for every-day users that focuses on fixing issues and improved workflow. It will be designed for multiple video monitors or a larger single one and it isn’t going to be cheap.

While the market size isn’t there yet, I would love to think Steinberg and/or Digital Performer are gradually leading the path to this.

The only thing I find annoying in cubase 8.5 is the changes on the mouse pointer in the time-line …

I like all the other features, Cubase 8.5 is a great DAW.

I too switched from Sonar. I tried Cubase more or less in desperation because I was so unproductive with Sonar for years. That was my primary reason for switching. However it was all the negativity on the Cakewalk forums – as you alluded to – that finally made me leave (though most of the users there are quite helpful).

But I’ve noticed that things have calmed down dramatically since the release of Sonar Platinum and the subsequent and frequent roll-out of updates and fixes. I think users now feel like they’re more plugged into the development/repair process.

By comparison, the general mood here seems a bit dour largely – from what I can tell – because users feel like Steinberg is ignoring them. It’s a strange situation because Cubase, from my perspective, is vastly superior to Sonar. And this should make users happier; yet the opposite is true.

The good news for Steinberg is that it seems like much less work to produce a world-class DAW than to simply listen to their users and spend a little more effort to satisfy their needs (like fixing existing bugs).

The combination of fantastic products and happy users would be unbeatable. Cheers…

true story:

I have never met a happy Cubase user. I have only heard their daw make killer tunes.

This is one of the things that most surprises and confuses me. When Sternberg did respond with their “we’re hearing you” letter and assurances that things would be changing, the one thing I figured was a dead cert was that Sternberg staff would open up communication with customers. And to be fair, it’s really good in some areas, such as Cubasis.

But with Cubase, its just crickets. Some of the feature request threads are 6 pages long, 6 months old, have 100% support rate from customers, and Sternberg still haven’t bothered to make a single comment (e.g. - [BON-18357] Option to disable new 8.5 window edge pop ups - Cubase - Steinberg Forums ). Is it any wonder that these boards are full of irritated, grumpy customers?

Coming from several other DAW’s before landing on Cubase professionally, this thread is very interesting to us.
We use Pro Tools, Studio One, here at the studio as well and switched from Sonar to our current DAW, Cubase.
I can absolutely say without reservation that there is simply no desert island DAW but Cubase is about as close that as we have found by far.
The DAW that has ‘everybody’s’ most beloved collective feature set does not and should not exist in the first place. No product can provide a constantly changing set of features at little or no cost just to please the unquenchable thirst of its user base that all have hugely varying requirements.
Are there bugs and improvements that need to be addressed? Absolutely. But as anyone who has ever used Pro Tools will tell you, the concept of Manufacturers forum based input and interactive problem solving, let alone new product based ideas, is literally laughable and has been that way far longer than anything i’ve seen on these forums not to mention their current subscription model is about as close to used car bait and switch tactics as you can get without being sued.
As so many Pro Tools users continue to hemorrhage towards Studio One’s faster and more efficient DAW without the one more monthly bill nonsense, it still doesn’t hold a candle to Cubase in the area of song creation tools or live band tracking and editing ( especially in the area of audio quantizing )
