I played with it for the first time today (as my doubler is based on a VariSpeed tape effect, I thought why not check out a “Tape Saturation” plug-in) . I should say I’ve never worked with real tape, so I don’t have a basis for comparison. I put it on a solo vocal track just so I could definitely appreciate it’s effect. As I turn it up, I do hear a distortion that is different from the only other kind I know of (when the output on the 2-bus is too high) … is it a pretty good example of real tape distortion (for those in the know)?
Are folks happy with this effect and using it? I could see using it as a send on a voice … are people putting it on the stereo bus also/mainly instead? Do you find it a useful tool?
Always used as an insert, in my opinion as a send effect the effect level is negligible and hard to hear.
Overall I like magneto II. I use it on vocals, snare drums, hihat, overheads, guitar & bass, organs.
For me (because I am older than dirt) it’s the sound compared to that of
the original Ampex 456 or Agfa 2 inch tape.
A sound BTW which you could not get rid of even if you wanted to.
Meaning not everything back-n-da-day was great.
Some stuff; (like tape saturation) you just had to live with and try and make it work for you.
Magneto II, not bad at this effect.
At least it can be turned off or not used at all.

Yes in the seventees and eighties all tube amps where dumped because of “better” transistor amps, looks like the circle is complete again
