Applying existing template to imported xml

Hi all, I’m exporting xmls as needed from finale in importing into dorico as I go.

I’ve imported a particular XML, and Dorico’s grabbed most everything and put it mostly in the right places. However, I was wondering if there’s a way to apply a template I’ve created to the imported XML?

I could open a new project with that template and copy and paste from the imported XML, but is it possible to apply the template to the XML?

Thanks!

Two Options:

  1. Use the Library Manager to copy settings over.
  2. Create a new Project from your Template and import Flows from the XML imported Project.

You can export and import Page Template Sets – use these icons at the bottom right of Engrave mode, under “Page Template Sets”.

Thanks guys!

Yes, then just import your new XML directly into it. If you uncheck all the xml import options in Preferences, then your new Dorico settings will be applied automatically.

Hello All

Chiming in here with a related question. I’ve got my template created in Dorico to import some XML lead sheets from Finale. But when I do, the XML lead sheet gets added to the end of my template, rather than copied into the existing 32 bars. I’m sure I can just do some cutting and pasting to move it, but I really want to just be able to create my template, and import the 32 bar tune into it. Surely I’m missing something here, which I’m going to assume is something like making sure my template is empty of bars (which I can’t figure out how to do).

The screenshots tell the tale.

How it started (with my template):

How it’s going (with the import):

Thanks, as always.

One more thing: just tried “New from Project Template”, and still got this:

When you import anything (an xml, a midi file or flows from another project) Dorico will always add them as an additional flow.

Thanks Janus, that helps. But sadly for me there is just something fundamental here I seem unable to understand about Dorico - in this case, it’s what is meant by “flows”. As best I can figure, they are like movements in a larger piece. But a lead sheet is just one piece. Is the trick then when importing to just delete the existing flow that’s there when one opens a project, and go on with the newly imported one? I’ll do some reading to try and understand the concept, but I’m struggling here with the basics still.

Yes, exactly.

Ok, great. Thanks. Well that’s a very important piece of the puzzle for me. Much appreciated.

lol. Chiming back in here with another related question.

I have an XML i just imported, simple lead sheet as above. Dorico imported it into flow #2, no problem, just delete the empty flow #1.

The problem this time is that somehow I created a second player with this import. There are two player in this flow (or do the players live in the whole score maybe?) Anyway, the lead sheet was imported into the “voice” players part, and there’s an empty “Lead Sheet” part.

How do I move the music from the voice part to the lead sheet part? (and delete the voice part). I haven’t yet figured out how to even display both parts in the full score. (Maybe it is displaying both, the “Lead sheet” player’s part is totally blank.

Thanks!

That’s a good question for sure, and I’ve had a similar situation. Curious what the pros think (we’ve well-established that I’m not a pro at this point!), but when this happened to me I just deleted the blank “Lead Sheet” part, then re-named the “Voice” part to - in your case, “Lead Sheet”. From there I just changed the sounds to whatever works for a lead sheet melody, and went ahead with just the one part. So no Finale-style cut-and-paste music moving for me there. I’m curious to know if there is an easier way to do this, or - as I’m learning - there’s just a different way that one needs to think about these kinds of things, particularly when importing.

If Dorico cannot reconcile the part identified in the XML with one already in the score it will create a new player.

The Setup page. Select the flow and tick the players you want and the layouts you want.

Select all the voice part. (select the 1st note, then edit>select to end of flow)
copy/paste into the lead sheet part. You can then delete the voice player in Setup.

Thanks Janus - I’ve ticked all parts and players, but I still don’t see the empty lead sheet player in the full score (write mode), so I don’t have anywhere to paste anything - see pics.

Any ideas? thanks!

This is what I ended up doing, to get this chart done, but it would definitely be useful in future to be able to copy and past between parts and flows!

This already possible, if you know the procedure…

Sure - I was having trouble getting the second part to show though, haha
