Audio connection lost when switching interfaces

We are using a PreSonus StudioLive 32R as our band’s main audio interface. However, when setting up VST Live, I also use other interfaces like a MOTU 828 or just the built-in MacBook inputs and outputs.

I’ve noticed that VST Live does not (or no longer) properly retain the assignments of audio inputs and outputs across interface changes. In the attached video, you can see that I first assign the correct device (StudioLive 32R, outputs 1–5) in the Connections tab. Then I change the input device in the Audio Setup to a different interface (e.g. MacBook Pro). Outputs 5–6 (Voc Becky and Voc Tim) retain the now-disabled device, while outputs 7–9 are reassigned to the MacBook’s default output automatically.

When I switch back to the StudioLive 32R, outputs 5–9 all show “Stereo Out 1+2” instead of the previously assigned outputs – the routing is lost.

There’s a similar issue with input assignments: If I change the input device back to the StudioLive 32R in the Audio Setup, the assigned inputs in the Stacks disappear and must be manually reassigned for every song and part.

This behavior is extremely frustrating. I initially prepared the entire show using a different interface, and now, after switching to the band’s live interface, I have to reassign all inputs manually for every song and part.

You are correct.
When you assign a port, but it is already known, nothing is done. But it needs to push it to the top of the list, otherwise next time the last top is picked which may be older.
Will be fixed with the next version, thanks a lot for fining and reporting!

Thank you very much for the quick response!

The issue with the disappearing inputs in the Stacks causes a huge amount of extra work – will this also be fixed with the upcoming update?

2.2.16 solved the problem, thanks!

Unfortunately, I need to report this issue again.

The input assignments in the Stacks are still not retained after saving and reopening the project.

I’m working with 5 vocal Stacks per song. On average, each song has 2–3 Parts – and I’m managing close to 100 songs. After reopening the project, all Stack input assignments are gone again.

That means I now have to manually reassign all 5 Stack inputs for every song and every part – again.

This is a massive amount of work which can’t be done right before the gig.

We have a gig in 3 weeks where we plan to use VST Live. This behavior is simply not acceptable for live use, and I urgently need a solution or workaround.

@musicullum can you help?

will check!

Intrigued: Why aren’t you using Global Stacks?

I’m actually not using Global Stacks because in our setup, the audio processing for vocal effects often needs to change from song to song, or even part to part. Many songs have different needs — different FX chains, different plugins.

We use a global stack for processing the Base Guitar, where only one plugin ist used with different presets.

My approach would be to use global stacks for the basics - gain, eq, compressor/limiter etc - and then add the unique FX within the song.
