Selecting Dorico->Preferences->Audio Setup.
The attached pic does not Show External Headphones?
Headphones should not appear in this menu unless they are USB connected, this menu should display the interfaces which are connected to your computer, you then connect your headphones to this interface.
If you don’t have an interface you should choose “Built-in Audio” then connect your headphones to your Mac headphone output and it will mute your Mac speakers.
Hope this helps.
And if this doesn’t happen automatically, you can switch between headphones and speakers in the Device Control Panel.

I’m a drummer so i have my mac headphone out connected to an input channel on a mixer, with other devices also.
So what you are saying makes sense, so I’ll have to disconnect from mixer
