If users were keen to develop consistent track naming, utilizing acronyms/”codes”, Steinberg could develop something where it selects the closest matching colour name and track picture file name.
In addition, if the user then put their mouse over the track colour header, or track picture, a modifier + mouse scroll would find the next closest matches.
For example, if user types
“Gtr” it would select the first colour/best match that starts with Gtr.
if the user types
“GtrE” it would select a picture of an Electric Guitar.
If the user then wants a different Guitar picture, they hover the mouse of Track Picture, modifier-mouse scroll, all pictures that start with or contain “GtrE”
If this wasn’t implemented, at the very least add a Search Filter auto sort in the Track Pictures dialog.
You can do the first one, auto-coloring tracks, with the Project Logical Editor and/or Macros.
Cannot set the Picture, though.
Another workaround could be to create a track presets for your commonly used instrument types (e.g. “Gtr”, “Bass” or Piano”) with all your preferred settings like color or picture, and then create new tracks from those. That’s what I do (if I don’t have them in my template to begin with), works quite well.
Yes I do that, the nice thing about this idea is being able to scroll through the next closest options… It’s much more modern HUI rather than having to open a window, choose a tab, try to find the picture, select it, press okay.
With Windows, just present a File Open dialogue to where Track Images are stored. Use the built-in sort and search features. I’m sure MacOS must have something similar.
