I was trying to use the AI knob of a CC121 to control a channel cue send level. Unlike with a “normal” send, it doesn’t seem to be possible, nor can I write automation for it. I can control or automate the master cue level but not the send level on an individual channel.
The scenario is that a vocalist wishes to turn the guide track’s cue level up and down on the fly whilst rehearsing a vocal. I don’t really want to use a standard send for their cue mix as that compromises the routing flexibilty in the Control Room.
I know that the AI knob can only control automatable controls. That’s why I’m asking for other suggestions. I could set the cue mix up on a send, but then I would lose some control room functions.
The use case is as outlined above - to have a knob (or fader) on a controller that can change the cue send level from a guide vocal. The singer wants to be able to ride the send level of the guide track in their cue mix whilst rehearsing. There’s no need to write it as automation, just to be able to assign the send level to a physical control other than mouse or mouse wheel.
As for whether it is appropriate to automate a cue send level or if it should be considered a static setting, all I can say is that I worked as a live production monitor engineer for 30 years, and performers often asked for a dynamic cue mix with specific balances for different sections of the music.
You obviously want to control “Level”. Note that the above screenshot is for the “selected” track, however you can always do the same for a channel in your mixer bank zone.
Generally this should be avoided unless we really know what we’re doing (as for example when setting up our controllers for project templates), because it generates an assignment to the send value of this specific channel, i.e. it’s of project scope. If then you open another project, you’ll no longer have this assignment available, or if you move to another track.
