I’ve using Cubase for two and half years. I am learning something new all the time. From observation and comments I’ve seen, it appears the Cubase resets certain preferences to factory defaults after a crash. This explains why certain preferences seem to change.
My method of restoring changed preferences is to do a backup of these folders
“\Users<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg
“\Users<user name>\Documents\ Steinberg\”
when all the preferences are set the way I want. Then if preferences get changed, I simply restore those two folders. Any comments are welcome.
Thank you for posting the link to the post on backing up preferences. After reading it, it seems unimaginably complex: noting all the the different files and their locations that need to be backed up.
That is why I opted to backup the two folders that I mentioned in my initial post. I am pretty certain that those two folders contain all the preferences mentioned in the post you referred to.
The advantage of backing up those two folders is sheer simplicity. The trade-off is disc space which isn’t too bad. On my system those two folders combined are less than 4.5 gb. Those two folders named Steinberg seemed to contain all the preferences.
I made one tweak to this backup system of backing up those two folders and that is to manually save my script for Midi Remote and back that up separately so my backup system is incredibly simple and I believe it’s completely comprehensive.
The only caveat is, to be sure that before you do a backup your preferences are exactly what you want and nothing has inadvertently gotten changed by Cubase’s resetting of preferences to default values.
Another thing that I do is to create presets for all my for all My preferences: Preferences, key commands, toolbar settings., track control presets, color sets, track control presets, etc. They all get backed up in those two folders.
Please correct me if I have gotten something wrong. I will repost if I noticed there was an error in my knowledge or reasoning.

I actually do as you do. I have settings backups back to 8.5. I also try to use Cubase’s save/open system rather than the plugin’s, so that plugin presets are all in one place: [Documents]\VST3 Presets.
And my “Documents” folder is on a separate physical drive. Nothing is on the C: drive that can’t safely be put somewhere else.
Also, those 2 folders you mention - on my system they are only 1 gigabyte.
If you want to backup media bay too be aware it is now @ “C:\Users\user name\AppData\Local\Steinberg\Steinberg MediaBay Server\”
