Bar Widths - Music XML Import

Hi, Team,

I’m working on a file that was imported from Finale via Music XML. Everything was going great until I started to engrave the parts, and I’m stuck with some layout issues, specifically with single bar rests. The bars in each part layout are squashed and nothing I do will allow me to adjust the width. I’ve tried moving them between systems and when I try to click and drag the barline handles they do not move.

Any ideas?

NOTE: the file I exported from Finale had rests in empty bars hidden on a staff by staff basis, and I have noticed that after importing the score layout to Dorico the bar rests remain permanently hidden regardless of the analogous option being selected (Layout Options>Players>Bar Rests and Multibar Rests>Show Bar Rests in Empty Bars).

Click on that first note and check to see if it has the property “Starts Voice.” You may have some missing rests.

Aha!

OK I clicked on the first note in the entire layout (Bar 1, beat 1) and “Starts Voice” is indeed selected. I went to the score and found that upon each instrument’s initial entrance “Stars Voice” was checked along with “Force position and duration” in the case of an instrument starting a bar with a rest. I deselected everything but I’m not seeing any changes…

There may be some other places where it’s selected too. I’m pretty sure it’s the Starts Voice and Ends Voice properties.

Ohhhh, just as you were responding I found that in another spot “Ends Voice” was checked. When I deselected it the problem was fixed! Thank you for the tip, I guess I’ll have to scrub each part? Luckily it’s a short piece!

Yep, it’s a common hazard of XML import.

You can make this job easier for future imports by carefully reviewing the settings on the MusicXML page of Preferences. Where possible, turn off as many of the options on this page as you can, to allow Dorico a freer hand when importing and interpreting the data in the MusicXML file.
