Barlines suddenly split between staffs in group

I still have a lot of problems/questions with the migration from Finale. The most acute is that the system barlines suddenly split between first staff and the rest. That makes repeat signs etc act strange. I cant seem to get rid of it.

You could try to select all, then Edit->Filter->Time Signatures (the X signposts) and delete them all. Finally, add a 3/4 at the beginning. If this is an xml-import, best to turn everything off under preferences->musicXML before importing. The X-signposts could also be barline changes since time signatures and barlines are a bit of the same thing in Dorico. If so, try deleting the barlines.

Bravo! That did it! Yes, xml import. There is room for improvements there and I hope that is a priority:-)

As I said, I only have text items ticked/selected under Preferences->MusicXML. That helps a lot.

It is usually the fault of the program that created the xml rather than Dorico (or other importers).

Dorico nicely will give you a line number of the error on import, which works easily if you are using an uncompressed musicxml import. Most of the times these are out of place decorations, and simply just deleting them in a text editor does the trick. Imports from MuseScore nearly always trip up on these.

I’ve never liked XML because 30 plus years ago they were hawking it as the next greatest thing since sliced bread. XML works great for making sure a document is lexically correct, but often falls flat on the semantics. So it’s great as an open interchange format where we can at least determine what’s going wrong, not so great nor efficient as a long term format.

thank you for this. Where do I find those line number of errors, actually?

Yes, I agree. In this case , if Finale has “filled out” a bar with automatic rests, it seems these rests do not follow xml into Dorico, so a whole voice can be shifted accordingly, and end up out of sync with the other voices.

It’s on the pop-up dialog that displays the error upon import. I write down what it says and then pull-up the musicxml file in text editor (I prefer use the highlighting text editor Notepad++) and go to those line numbers.

You can fix the errors in small stages, that’s how I work. I fix a few, then attempt another import noticing that the errors I fixed are properly gone and then writing done the next ones to do.

To edit, you do need to be using the an uncompressed file (.musicxml) and not the compressed (.mxl) file though.

It is not uncommon for Finale voices (Levels) spread out with bars of rests to become disassociated with their original location when exported as XML.
