I purchased Dorico for iOS a whole while ago and use it on and off for composing, creating lead sheets while at the piano because ipad and pencil is just so much handier and less of a distraction than a laptop behind the piano …
I have always understood that some advanced features are only available on desktop and made my peace with that.
However I recently had to notice that basic engraving features like line breaks are now also behind a paywall. While the product was sold to me as a one-off payment with this (and other) feature(s) enabled, it now demands paying up a subscription for a feature that was previously in my purchase.
Dorico is not an online service, the iOS version still has many usability bugs/nuisances, while understanding that keeping up with iOS compatibility etc requires development effort I think it’s absolutely outrageous that the product is being sold and afterwards some features get disabled which were previously available in this version.
Not even looking for an answer on this, just an expression of customer dissatisfaction after having been a loyal Steinberg customer for almost 20 years…
Why make a -almost- great product like Dorico (I say almost because I feel it lacks some modern features to really provide that next level ease of digital notation experience it’s trying to sell) and then upset your existing customers by disabling previously paid for features?
To be honest, I wonder why Doric for iPad is even being sold for a fee. It took years to fix the dysfunctional on-screen keyboard. Working with AU plugins is still very much a beta experience. Starting with selecting from a long list of plugins—almost impossible, since scrolling with your finger hardly works—to the issue of already loaded plugins “disappearing,” I have also mentioned other problems here that are, at best, frustrating.
I am quite certain this was not a developer’s decision to offer the program for sale in this state—or at least I hope so.
However, the desktop version remains the best music-making software I have ever used. It is an absolute joy to work with.
Sometimes, after an update to the app, it ‘forgets’ whether you’ve paid. There’s a “Restore Purchase” button that checks back with the Apple Store and should give you access to the full feature set.
There hasn’t been any sneaky removal of any functions.
Always look for an answer – things may not be as bad as they seem!
Jens, I have also paid the amount for Dorico ipadOS lifetime licence (one-off payment), and I can confirm that all functions work as expected.
Make sure your iPad is signed into your AppleID account - as that is how Apple knows about the apps you purchased. And yes, as @benwiggy notes, you can restore your purchase from within Dorico, in case the connection is lost.
