Hi folks. I’m writing for bass trumpet in E-flat and I noticed the transposition is wrong. It is an octave lower than it should be. The bass trumpet sounds down a 6th so written middle C is the E-flat below middle C (E-flat 3). Right now it is transposing an octave plus a 6th down to E-flat 2. Is there a way to alter the transposition of this instrument to put it in the right octave? I have in the meantime been writing for bass trumpet in C which is in the correct octave but it is not the instrument I want at the end of the day. I looked for other threads on similar problems but there didn’t seem to be a definitive answer. I am on Dorico 4. Thanks.
Transposition’s not my bailiwick, but could you not change the transposition in the edit instrument definition in Setup?
I see. So that’s how it’s solved. Unfortunately that feature is not available in Dorico 4, so I guess I’m out of luck unless I buy the upgrade. Thanks for the reply.
Two solutions.
-
Put in a Transposition Override in Setup mode. Right click the Layout and select Clef and Transposition overrides. Be sure to change both the Score and the Part.
-
Use an Alto Horn and rename it.
Note: In the future it’s helpful if you specify which version you’re using. Otherwise everyone will assume you have the latest version of Dorico Pro.
Thanks for the reply. I’m trying to do the “Clef and Transposition overrides” but the option is greyed out. Am I missing something?
With regards to the version, if you look closely at my original post you will see I did specify the version. Thanks.
Never mind I got it to un grey.
So I changed the transposition from Eb2 to Eb3 and hit OK but then it didn’t change in the score. It’s still inputting as the old transposition.
Never mind I figured it out. I needed to do it for the conductor not the player. Thanks for the help.
My apologies, I missed that.
This has to be done in both the score and the part since it is a Layout specific setting.
Thank you
Hi. I am involved in brass band with old and large archive. So I am solving similar problem.
My problem is with the sound of both accompanying Trumpets. Both E-flat (Tenor trumpet) and B-flat (Bass Trumpet). Both trumpets has written range to F sharp under lines. But in Dorico the sound of the EsTpt ends on written C-sharp below lines and sound of BTpt ends even on F-sharp in lines. Both these trumpets simply use normal B-flat trumpet sound with its range limit. Is there a possibility to use lower trumpet sounds in these instruments? So increase a range of the trumpet sound? Not using horns or trombones. Thanks.
(Both mentioned trumpets use right trasposition by default in Dorico)
I assume you are using Dorico‘s standard sounds? If so, then you are sadly out of luck.
You could consider an alternative sound library, such as Noteperformer. The great thing about NP is that because it is a mix of sampling and synthesizing, it can create unlimited range in playback (though, less and less realistic if going to the extreme).
Ideally you would want a sound library that has specific Bass Trumpet Samples, but I don’t know any of such.
Hi. Thanks for the answer. I really use Dorico standard sounds. I am not so demanding for looking for a specific sound of Bass Trumpet so I would be satisfied with increased range of the trumpet. Probably I have to look for the solution in Halion Topics. How to change gray keys to white keys in the instrument in bass trumpet channel. I think it should be more simple then install new sound library. Rather I hope it is.
Halion is a sample library which uses small recordings of real instruments played by real players in all dynamics/playing techniques/timbres they could fit into the recording session/budget.
Usually that means that they don’t go beyond the range they offer, and I do not think HALION allows for this. But you can certainly try!
I believe the Halion Sonic Selection playback template has unlimited ranges since it uses GM rather than sampled libraries.
At this point it’s debatable if not chosing a trombone instead is a better result
