With upcoming sales, I am thinking of using BBCSO Core for both Dorico 6 and Cubase 15.
I already have SSO 2024 but would like to have BBCSO Core for composing in Dorico and then transfering via Dorico file to Cubase 15 then add any additional instruments via SSO 2024.
Does the BBCSO Core Expression Map on the Dorico Blog still work?
With Cubase 15 your supposed to be able to transfer Dorico Expression maps for your libraries.
Decided to get the BBCSO Core for Black Friday sale with the extra 20% off on the sale price.
I got the BBCSO Core pt file to work in Dorico 6 though I found that even though I did the drag and drop into the hub (following the video), I still had to go to play/playback template and click on the BBSCO and apply. It is slower than the Halion Iconica Sketch to load but that is expected. Can definitely hear the difference. I think there are a few articulations that may need to be adjusted, ie the marcato was rather loud.
Cubase 15 imports a doricolib file (the expression map). Have to save the different expression maps from dorico 6 - under Play mode, select the edit expression map and choose export library. Then drag and drop into Cubase 15 expression map setup. It doesn’t save groups and does need some tweaking - noticed keyswitches are different than the BBCSO instrument but I just kept them as is.
Overall the migration is workable and I am so please that I do not need to start the expression maps from scratch.
I did do some preliminary expression maps in new Cubase 15 with SSO 2024 and find it is more simpler than Dorico 6 which is why I am so pleased with the migration so far of BBCSO Core expression maps from Dorico 6 to Cubase 15. I have more testing to do but this gets me started on a consistent workflow from Dorico 6 to Cubase 15.
Good to hear it works. Have you also tried it the other way around i.e import an expression map made with the new procedure in Cubase 15 and then import it in Dorico. This functionality is available since a long time and I tried it with several Art Conductor maps but it always requires some additional work to connect the articulations to techniques available in Dorico. Only the basic ones like staccato, legato connect automatically.
Yes, I just tested using the SSO strings expression map that I made in Cubase 15. Pressing the Cubase expression map import did give all the articulation that I had mapped in Cubase 15. ( note I did not map everything for the strings). There is more than just the basics. However playing after that was very low, so I think I would have to add endpoints, create a playable dorico map etc which would require me to watch some more dorico videos. I barely know setting up expression maps in dorico. But just straight import shows the mapping below:
Double click on the articulations in the second column of the expression map and you will see that many playback techniques are blank but some like tremolo, tenuto and the aforementioned have a technique linked.
To get all articulations of SSO to playback, you then have to connect the articulation with a playback technique out of the available list. You can also use multiple techniques like staccato+legato. If you do not find anything in the list which resembles the artiuclation you need, you can add your own playback technique under library playback techniques.
Here is the Bartok screen. I didn’t double click just selected it which shows the control change required to play the articulation. Not sure if this what you are looking for.
You should double click on the text Bartok Pizzicato: Bartok/snap. Then the list of playback techniques which are linked to the control change open. If there is a complicated text Dorico often cannot associate it with anything in the list and the articulation will not play.
Here the list after double clicking for one of my libraries and in this case the link is correct and the bartok pizzicato plays.
If all that is correct and the bartok pizzicato still does not play something else is wrong. I have BBCSO but that uses key switches. I do not have any libaries using control changes for articulations.
For the SSO strings that I set up in Cubase 15, double clicking Bartok/pizz did show up automatically as per below and did play via the small play button in column 1 (pic1). Most dynamics did transfer through via the double click & play except Long Rachm and the Short 0’s. I think that would be expected as those don’t seem to be in the list. Also the volume dynamics were only on note velocity for all the articulations, so for those that need CC1 such as legato or sustain those would need to be changed (pic2).
However, keep in mind that the new expression maps feature has bugs/issues in Cubase 15 that hopefully will be resolved in the next maintenance update, so importing from Cubase 15 to Dorico 6 may also have issues. Still, I am currently trying to finish a project in Cubase 15 using the new expression maps feature even with the bugs.
Good that you found the way to check that all articulations have a link in Dorico. What Janus mentioned could make it work. The lock setting for UACC is explained in several other threads. This is a very long one also related to SSO.
Thank you so much for the link Mavros. That will be very useful when I want to bring a few instruments from SSO 2024 that BBCSO Core does not have from Cubase to Dorico.
Right now, I am please to know I can use the current Steinberg’s expression map for BBCSO Core within Dorico 6 so I can export that into Cubase 15 and have better interchange between the two software.
