Beaming of longer metres

With the options available in Note Group and Beam Grouping, I can get Dorico to beam 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 nearly perfectly by default. There’s still a few rhythms that need fixing, but that’s for a different thread.

Longer metres, such as 5/4, 6/4, or 7/4, still need a lot of manual override. In the picture shown below, I want the bottom beaming (beamed as two measures of 3/4), but displayed as 6/4 and without the dashed barline.

Similarly for 7/4, I want it beamed as 2/4 + 2/4 + 3/4, or some order of those. Same idea goes for 5/4. Rhythms in 3/2 would be beamed as 2/4 + 2/4 + 2/4. A way to do this natively would greatly reduce the amount of manual overrides needed to beam things correctly in these longer metres.

In the time signature popover, for the 7/4 grouping, enter [2+2+3]/4

For the 3/2 time signature, I’m not sure if this works but you could try entering [1+1+1]/2. Does this actually work?

Unfortunately that doesn’t fix the problem. The 6/4 shown was imputed as [3+3]/4. Dorico still beans it wrong.

Recently, there was an option added to beam 2/2 the same as 4/4. I’d love a similar option for 5/4, 6/4, 7/4, etc.

What about the input for the 7/4 that I suggested?

Apologies if I am confused about something!

Hi @SmithAlexander
I tried your example and if you write the 6/4 as [1+1+1+1+1+1]/4 it comes pretty near of what you want.

and if you choose the following option it comes out exactely as you want

I usually do use [1+1+1+1+1+1]/4. It still beams some rhythms wrong, but not as many as a normal [3+3]/4. Less manual overrides for me, but I still think Dorico should be able to get this correct without using Force Duration.

Unfortunately that still doesn’t solve my problem. Ideally, Dorcio should treat the “2” part of [2+2+3]/4 as a 2/4 measure and the “3” part as a 3/4 measure, all contained within the single 7/4 measure.

Currently, it doesn’t, and instead gives this.

My current workaround is [1+1+1+1+1+1+1]/4, which gets me closer, but not all the way to the correct beaming.

Can you post a picture with examples of desired beamings for 7/4 and/or 5/4 (as you did in the first post)?

Daniel also had a response about this in this thread from January 2021.
