The title basically says it all - I’m dealing with a huge symphonic score, bumping a lot of dynamics around, and the inability to unlink dynamics is a HUGE problem. I have to go back to “write” mode (galley view), select the dynamic, unlink it, then go back to engrave mode, and the score is like 250+ pages. It takes 5+ seconds each time to move from one mode to teh other.
Help!
It is possible to unlink (and ungroup) more than one dynamic marking at a time.
In Write mode, I will often select the whole score, filter for dynamics, and then unlink then all in one go. Sometimes I restrict my selection to only a portion of the score or even just one instrument. Whichever way, it is not necessary to do them one by one. Keep in mind that if you are using instrument filters in Galley view, only what is shown can be selected and only what is selected can have an action applied to it.
It’s also possible to stop Dorico from automatically linking dynamics. I have set it up this way and it has saved me a heap of drama.
Selecting all dynamics and unlinking them in one go does not always work, as I recall. I don’t know whether this has been changed recently, and I don’t know if I can replicate this, so it might be a bit unfair.
I don’t understand. You can move linked dynamics independently in engrave…
What is the problem you want to solve?
No, it is not always possible.
Most of the times linked dynamics, even in staves far apart, will move together.
Other times they will not.
I have not been able to find out what causes one or the other behaviour.
I thought the same thing but then tried it: after moving one dynamic, all linked ones moved too.
I can confirm what @dan_kreider had found before: Select All + Edit->Notations->Dynamics->Unlink does not get them all.
It would be wonderful if something like Alt/Option + Click in Engrave mode unlinked for editing. I’m guessing it’s just because I’m a newbie and there will be some easy way of doing this, but it feels like a huge step backwards from Finale and other “dumb” dynamic alignment software (given so much else that is AMAZING about Dorico dynamics!)
I’d need to see an example project where doing Select All and then unlinking dynamics doesn’t unlink all of them, ideally. Do you have a minimal project that reproduces the problem?
Here is an 8-measure string quartet w/ a lot of dynamics (damn-you late Beethoven!) where on my Mac (15.1.1, M4) Select-All + Edit->Notations->Dynamics->Unlink gets most of them but the “p” in the 8th measure remains linked across all instruments.

are you sure it isn’t Ungroup Dynamics that you want? - that fixes bar 8
I have indeed found that selecting all and calling the “unlink dynamics” command does not work if in Page View and condensing is activated. This is probably due to the fact that the condensed dynamics are not included in “all” when selecting all. However, when doing these operations in Galley View, I can’t recall that I’ve ever had any problems with some dynamics not being unlinked.
