Plugged in the Korg Kross 2 to my Windows 11 (up to date) laptop with Cubase AI 15. I got it to use the Korg native sounds by setting up MIDI tracks and making sure the MIDI channels were the same. But I cannot get the VSTs to work right. I set up a VST track but can’t seem to get the Korg to reliably play that VST. For example, I make a new track using Halion, select an instrument. I make sure the channel is selected, for example “3.” On the Korg, in the Sequencer, I go to the 3rd instrument (which has MIDI track 3), and set it to EXT so that I don’t hear the Korg instrument (and should just hear the VST I’d thing). But I can’t seem to get the Korg to trigger the VST. It did once (while I had the Korg sequencer 3 set to BTH (where I hear the Korg sound and the VST), but 1) I can’t seem to recreate that and 2) there was a massive latency. On Cubase the input it my Kross 2 and the output is the Steinberg ASIO (and comes out my laptop speakers). This is confusing… hopefully my post makes some sense to someone who can explain this to me and point out where I’m going wrong here. Thanks. Brad
Could you give us more informations about the audio interface you are using, if any ?
Indeed, as the Output should be the instrument that you are using within the Instrument track created. So, to clarify, could you also post here the following screenshots ?

Thanks so much for the reply, and here are some screenshots. Hopefully it’s the information that you need. And, I am not using an audio interface. Should I be? I didn’t think it would be necessary since I’m just trying to do midi at this point (I basically just wanted a sequencer for my Korg and to be able to use the VSTs as well). But I suppose I could add some vocoder and audio through the Korg at some point. I did wonder what would happen when I successfully control the VST with the Korg-- that track will only be heard from the laptop while the other (Korg) tracks will be coming from the Korg and going to my speakers. So confusing (to me, at least).
Above: my Korg sequencer layout where I am trying to use the 3rd instrument as an external control for the Halion. I designated everything that I could find for that instrument channel 3 (maybe that’s where I’m messing it up?)
It would be better, as soon as you are attempting to work with VSTis. This said, the lantencies reported by the Steinberg built-In ASIO driver is acceptable.
Conerning your screenshots :
In the last one, and as you are about to create an Instrument Track, what the MIDI 01/02 ones are for ? I guess that they are dedicated to the recording of the MIDI messages coming from the Korg, but just want to be sure, as there are two of them.
About the Instrument Track, its setting seems ok. So, do you get MIDI messages on the Instrument track, once created ? If possible, a screenshot of the track in the project window while playing it, with its inspector visible, would help.
And here’s a screen capture of me playing the VST track… you can see the blue flicker in the bottom right as I tap the keyboard, so signal is getting to the laptop, it’s just not triggering the VST even though that track is set to channel 3 as is the “instrument” (set to EXT) in the Korg.
Ok I had to find how to get that routing window to show. Here it is, and when I press the keys on the korg I only get the blue flicker on main screen (like in the clip I sent before), but nothing on any of these windows. When I click on the cubase keyboard shown on the screen, I do hear it fine.
