Behringer X Touch Compact mapping issues

I’m having a strange issue with my new Behringer X Touch Compact surface controller. I have Cubase 14 Artist (am just about to switch to Pro). Here is how I’m trying to use it:

Layer A:

  • Faders 1-8 assigned to Tracks 1-8 in Cubase
  • Encoders 1-8 assigned to Pan knob for tracks 1-8 for turn, and monitor on/off for tracks 1-8
  • Buttons 1-8 (first row below encoders) to Solo Tracks 1-8
  • Buttons 9-16 to Mute Tracks 1-8
  • Buttons 17-24 to Record Arm Tracks 1-8
  • The buttons below the fader I intend to use as a Track selector for each of the respective tracks
  • Encoders 9-16… I haven’t quite decided how I want to use those, but any suggestions would be great once I can get the rest figured out…

Layer B:

  • Faders 1-8 assigned to Tracks 9-16 in Cubase
  • Encoders 1-8 assigned to Pan knob for tracks 9-16 for turn, and monitor on/off for tracks 9-16
  • Buttons 1-8 (first row below encoders) to Solo Tracks 9-16
  • Buttons 9-16 to Mute Tracks 9-16
  • Buttons 17-24 to Record Arm Tracks 9-16
  • The buttons below the fader I intend to use as a Track selector for each of the respective tracks (in Layer B it would be for Tracks 9-16)
  • Encoders 9-16… I haven’t quite decided how I want to use those, but any suggestions would be great once I can get the rest figured out…

The issue I’m experiencing is that once I update the mappings on both the X Touch Editor and Cubase MIDI Remote, for Layer B, it seems to work fine / as I intended, with the appropriate response in the DAW… For Layer A, there’s some weird behaviour - for example:

  • If I select the Button below Fader 1 to “Select Track” per my mapping, Faders 3 and 4 jump to the top.
  • When I push the next Button under Fader 2, Faders 3 and 4 jump back to the bottom.
  • When I move Fader 1, Fader 5 or 6 jumps up for as long as I’m holding Fader 1, then jumps back down when I release.

I’m not sure what the problem is… I assume it has something to do with the mapping I chose, and I’ve tried changing the mapping but then the DAW doesn’t respond to any of the action on the X Touch Compact..

Has anyone else faced this issue, or have any idea of how I can troubleshoot this?

Welcome @apollosent !

From what you describe, I have a strong suspicion that you are using the Compact’s global channel in your assignments. Make sure you don’t, because the global channel (assigned in the main page of X-Touch Editor), is the channel reserved by the unit for its own internal purposes.

Are you perchance using MC mode on the device?

Thanks for the reply @ggmanestraki . I’ll try changing the global channel (I’m a bit new to MIDI assignment like this).

I had also switched to MC Mode for the time being as a sort of “work-around” since I can drag the tracks to the top 8. Hopefully changing the global channel works, definitely going to try that out tonight.

Hi everyone.

I just bought an Xtouch Compact to use in conjunction with Cubase Artist 15 and a Yamaha Genos2 keyboard.

The information provided by Behringer is really very brief and there isn’t much about it on the internet.

I see that you have already encountered and probably solved some problems.

I hope you don’t mind me joining your discussion. Let me know if it would be better to create a new topic.

I have a few questions, thank you if you can help me with some of them.

My wish would be to use the XTC on Cubase to manage balances and automation live on certain tracks.

After successfully adding Makie Control via the input/output ports, it seems to be working well; the faders are correctly controlling the track volumes. The XTC is set to MC mode.

The touch controls bother me a little because we don’t always have full control over our movements.

Is it possible to disable them in Cubase? I saw in the editor that you can turn the channel “off” but there’s no access in MC Mode (all the values are greyed out!).

Is it because Cubase is open? Can’t we use the X TOUCH editor if Cubase is active?

What exactly is the difference between “standard” and “MC” mode?

I also wanted to assign to certain faders the ability to manage certain CCs, modulation, expression, vibrato live… But the MC mode, which suits me only partially, does not allow me to do this.

This is how I’ll begin learning how to use my XTC controller.

Thank you if you can help me with these issues.
