Best CPU in 2025 for VST Live Pro 2?

Hello
I’m currently running VST Live Pro 2 on an I7 7700K with 32GB RAM. I’m thinking about upgrading my PC…
Which CPU would currently be the best for VST Live Pro 2 with reserve?

Regards
Christian

Hi, it depends on the load you are putting through VSTL and what features you are using. I am running a Windows 11 ASUS Zenbook Duo with an 11th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i7-1195G7, 16GB DDR4. I have 8 audio stacks going through VSTL, with 3-4 Waves plugins inserts on each channel, FX Sends, IEM sends, Chords display, Lyrics display, Video display, 8 Audio stems for Backing Tracks and DMX Lighting.
Also running Audio at 128 sample rate with no dropout or lag. So it could be worth upgrading if you want to make the most out of VSTL otherwise if you are a light user, and not using all the features yet, then your system will be fine. Hope that helps a little.

Cheers, Johnny.

Hi @stips78 !

Do you have perf issues with your current sys? VSTL itself isn’t cpu hungry. But as soon as your demands are growing
Plug-ins (instruments, fx’s)
DMX (!)
Video files (resolution, format, parallel quantity)

More and more horsepower is needed. But only you can see your exact demands.

I think the fastest ones are Apple’s recent top M series and Snapdragon ARM’s for WINDOWS, but afaik WIN ARM is not yet supported by VSTL

Hi, so far it’s working… I have a setlist with around 15 songs, each song with several audio backing tracks and 2 layers for Ezdrummer 3, for my e-drum that I play live. The whole thing with buffer size 64, which is important for live drumming because of latency. If I then add a 3rd instance as 3rd layer, I sometimes get into the red CPU area…

If you have audio multiprocessing off, the red area is due to VST live using only 1 core for all audio processing. Try multicore audio processing in edit/preferences/audio (still buggy especially for tracks playback) this should distribute processing load to all cores.

Developers are right now in the process of improving multicore audio to solve playback crackles issue … we all hope!!

Otherwise, if running single core, it’s not number of cores that matter, as much as single core speed. So I have a i7 11750H and single core run at 4.1-4.6 GHz and can easily run multiple VSTs, but when enabling multicore my load goes from 90% to 20% (!!!) … so you might be able to run a lot if multicore issues will be solved!

Cheers, Ciro.

Yes I will try that, thanks for the tip!

Hello, I just tried to work with multichannel turned on… Unfortunately, as has been described many times in the forum, I also get audio crackling and noise in the audio files. Unfortunately, this is useless for me and I have deactivated it again. I hope that these problems will be resolved in the near future, because in times of monster CPUs this would be a real shame.

Best regards
Christian

Ok, I’ll do that, thanks for the tip!

I have to take up the topic again, if we stick with Windows PC, Intel or AMD are recommended? I’m all about real-time audio… thx

Mac, go for Macor wait a bit, snapdragon ARM is getting into PC’s (this surely will take some time).

ok,…i wait but I don’t want a laptop. I want a desktop computer in a 19" Rack…

On win11 with intel i7 or i9 8 cores 16 thread, but most importan is the single core max frequency, the higher the better. Never had any bottleneck on laptop with i7 10870H 4,5 ghz single core 4,1 ghz all cores turbo boost.

Then, 32 gb ram essential, Fast ssd nvme, and a decent dedicated gpu.

Cheers, Ciro.

I agree with @ciro1983811 , with exemption:
all depends on your needs (tracks, plugins, DMX, videos, etc…)

I also understand the rack-mount concept and don’t forget to solve the monitor somehow (rack-shelve, etc…). The standard (and the old) MacMini is rack height, also there are 9,5" MiniPC’s…

ok, many roads lead to the goal…thx

Also, when you e.g.: want to play the available 6 videos parallelly from VL… you need machine with slot for Special video output card, etc etc :sunglasses:

Hi musicullum

I just tried it, unfortunately with the same result, crackling in the audio tracks, unusable…

Hi @stips78 ,

MP looks working quite nice now for us, multiple users. Can you describe when do you experience crackles? Using WIN11, right?

@fkalmus Have you tried MP on Apple Silicon Mac? Because on my Mac Studio M1 Max and on my MacbookPro M1 pro, it doesn’t work at all, with multiprocessing enabled. Disabled is all ok, huge projects where the cpu indicator doesn’t reach 10 percent. Can any other Mac M1 users share their experience?

Dumb question - have you got Rosetta turned on?
