Hi there,
Does anyone have any good suggestions regarding the best external SSD drive to use in 2024?
Cheers,
Seb
I have 6 (4 sata and 2 nvme) and my best choice is WD 2TB My Passport SSD Portable SSD USB-C.
Other brands used (Silicon Power, Crucial and Kingston).
My 2-cent:
Best for performance and reliability is Samsung.
WD uses Kioxia, which is good, and Crucial uses Micron, which is good too.
Other generic brands, I would not trust.
Look for USB 3.2 Gen2. (Best is Gen2 x2, but few computers support it)
Top dog these days is Samsung T9. The T7 is slower but still a very good pick.
I’m betting most known brand drives have far better performance than the USB connection on the average computer will provide, and more than the average project will need. If this is about recording live onto an external drive then of course that’s a bit different, but I’ve generally had good experience with all external drives.
Actually, really the one thing that I can see is a potential issue is the enclosure itself rather than the SSD inside it.
Anyway, WD and Samsung are both good I think. For internal drives I’ve used Crucial, Silicon Power and others as well. No real problems.
Thank you all for your generous replies!
Keep up the good work.
Cheers,
Seb
