Hello, I am looking for the best optical music recognition software that can either give you the note name “on” the note itself, or export to midi.

See here Scanning the current OMR landscape - Scoring Notes for a current review of a couple of OMR software.
Export to Midi is definitely possible in PlayScore 2, probably also in the other software.
A software that gives you the “note name” isn’t among them, as far as I’m aware, so you’ll have to export to musicxml.
Which one would you recommand if I want to take screenshot from my computer or small parts and import them into the software ?
You might just find simply inputting the notes by hand is more efficient for smaller snippets. I’ve never had much luck with OMR software and have spent most of the time fixing its mistakes – YMMV…
that’s what I am currently doing with the new score editor in cubase 14, it’s actually so much better than the old score editor
I use Playscore 2 occasionally, it works pretty well! Ever since I use 4k screens, I can even work with photos taken from my monitors…
My students always think it’s magic taking a photo of their Christmas carols they are bringing to their lessons and have the app play it back in seconds…
The app can export MusicXML, what I do is save it in OneDrive on my phone, let it sync for a few seconds and then open it on the studio computer in Dorico. With simple tunes, there is not much editing after the fact.
I also used to use Photoscore, if you have good quality PDFs, it’s can work reasonably well, it has a few quirks like not handling multibar rests.
You also need to carefully select what you want it to read, chord symbols, text, tempos and lyrics get often mashed together.
Switching some of those off helps quite a bit, and chord symbols I find easier to add after the fact than the notes themselves.
Hope this helps,
Benji
I am currently testing soundslice, its excellent it does what I want, analyze a screenshot, give me the midi.
The only cons are that first it’s a subscription model limited to 100 scan a month, second it’s a web app so no offline…
