Hi. I’m doing a bunch of small projects to learn Cubase functions better.
Today, I recorded an eight measure bass line without the guide of a click track. My timing is not terrible but there are natural tempo fluctuations.
I’m just coming up with different ways of working with stuff like this. I figured I’d like to do two things: force a VSTi to follow the natural tempo fluctuations of the original bass line, and face the bass line to follow a VSTi on a metronomic tempo grid.
The first job was straightforward enough. I used tempo detection, made a simple pattern in GA, and the beats line up with the natural tempo fluctuations. It turned out pretty good!
Now, I’d like to make the bass line conform to a metronomic tempo, and I’m a little stumped. Before I spin my wheels and possibly frustrate myself, I’d like to solicit advice from the forum.
In brainstorming, it seems like a reasonable thing to do would be take an average from all the tempo values generated by the “detect tempo” operation. Once I have an average, I could start a new project and set its tempo to that value, and then import the original bass line and use something like free warp. (Here’s another point of confusion–there seem to be at least a couple ways of doing time-based edits and I’m not sure which is best for the job I’m trying to do.)
If you have thoughts about what operations and workflow might be best, I’d love to hear from you! Thanks.
