Boxed text, and 8 without bassa

Hello,

New here and new to Dorico. Since Finale announced its ending of support last week and recommended Dorico, I thought I would give it a try. Most things seem doable (although through a different flow), but two things I have been trying to do that have not worked as of yet:

  1. Boxed text: I try to create a boxed text near where the “Lyricist” would be listed, but this is for the approximate Duration of a piece. I know many publishers do this, and in Finale this was a breeze - I just create an Expression term, put a rectangle around it, and paste it at the top left of the first page. I cannot seem to do this any way in Dorico Pro, but am willing to see if there are any workarounds. (Otherwise, I may have to go to Sibelius for publishing reasons.)

  2. The 8 without the bassa. I know I can do a workaround for this, but it is quite annoying having to use the 8va tool to notate a 8--------| without the “bassa” in my scores. Just as Behind Bars justifies using only the 8, I would like to use only the 8 in my scores when it is to play an octave lower. Any help with this would be great, too. (Since I have a workaround, something like Sibelius would not be necessary, but it is one more reason why I might go another direction.)

Thank you for the clarifications!

Sincerely,

Ian Guthrie

For 1 you could add a text field to the Page templates → First Page in Engrave Mode. Then you can use that as a default template for all your pieces.

For 2 check Engraving Options ->Octave Lines

Here’s a file you can check

Dear Jesele,

Thank you for those suggestions! For (1), the issue is still that the text is not boxed. That is what I am hoping to create. For (2), for some reason, it was not working on my Dorico. I will see if your test file answers it for me, but for some reason, when I was trying that option, the system gave an 8 [text not recognized box] for the octave below.

I will update my findings shortly.

Sincerely,

Ian Guthrie

Ah, forgot about the box. Let me check.

Updated file and for 2 it is a combo of 2 or more settings

You can also make paragraph styles “boxed”, which allows you to show a box snugly around the text, regardless of the size of its text frame.

You can do that by turning on the Border option for a paragraph style in the Library > Paragraph Styles dialog.

Particularly useful for creating boxed part names, using the same page template, where some parts might be “Flute” and others “Contrabassoon”.

Thanks! This solved that awfully fast!

Thank you so much, Jesele! The demo file was also very helpful, as I realized there was just one small tweak I had to make for my ottava options! The boxed text example was also helpful! Thanks!

de nada, when I read that you thought about switching to Sibelius I had to take action.
Worked with and taught Finale for 10 years, then Sibelius for 10 years, and now Dorico since version 1 although I’m now retired. There is no comparison as far as I am concerned. :grinning:
