Brackets in piano or organ music

In piano or organ music brackets are used to show that some notes in one staff are to be played by “the other” hand. Or they indicate that dynamics or text belong to the notes within the bracket.

At the moment Dorico doesn’t provide these brackets. I tried to copy them from https://w3c.github.io/smufl/gitbook/tables/keyboard-techniques.html and insert them in a text frame. But then I have to increase the font size so much, that the lines are too thick.

Does anyone have discoverd a workaround for these brackets?

For the first one - how about using the non-arpeggio symbol found under ornaments (tr)?
You can adjust the length of the line in Engrave mode.

The second one - is this also too thick using text object?

Anders,
that’s a good idea. The hooks are a bit small; but it’s better than nothing.

Thank you for your advice.

Thomas

Luckily, you can adjust the hook length in Engraving options → Arpeggio signs.
No problem!

And I can adjust the line width of the Arpeggio sign. That’s great! So I can adjust it to the line width of the text object for the second one.

What I’ve learned today: I always have to look both into properties panel AND engraving options.

Thank you Anders.

Adding this feature would be fantastic, by the way.

You also now have the ability to create custom symbols. I used a unicode character to add the LH bracket in one of my scores and it worked reasonably well. Not quite perfect, but perfectly acceptable.

Would you care to elaborate on how to do this? I’m afraid I don’t quite understand how you mean… Thanks!

You can use Engrave > Playing Techniques to create custom symbols. You’ll find the necessary brackets in the ‘Keyboard techniques’ range shown in the editor.

You’re a life-saver, Daniel! Again kudos on the outstanding customer service (not to mention the software!)
