I’m writing some music with barlines across systems. I’m putting some phrases / snippets of italicized lyrics in for reference points for the instrumentalists. These often collide with the cross-system barlines. Is there a way to break just an individual barline to avoid collision with the lyrics? Not seeing it addressed in the manual…

You could change your lyrics paragraph style to have an explicit white background, although this may have other unwanted consequences.
By default, choruses in lyrics use italics, so if you aren’t using a chorus directly, you could enter these lyrics as a chorus, and then you would only have to change the background of the Lyrics (Chorus) paragraph style, instead of the base Lyrics paragraph style.
If I’m understanding you correctly, maybe you could also enter this as staff text instead of lyrics and then turn on the “Erase background” property for each item.
But these aren’t actually the question you asked! In Engrave mode, you can select any barline and then use Alt/Opt+arrow keys to move its endpoints. But you can’t move them to arbitrary positions, just to the tops/bottoms of staves, and this this change affects all music from the current system on – so you’d need to reset the change on the next system (and the system-wide look may not be what you want, anyway).
Or create a white-bg character style and use for that word only.
