Broken Multi Bar Rests

I am having trouble when I have “Ritardando” over the last bar of a multi bar rest. The rest is broken and a single bar rest is shown (see bar 38 in the attachment).
I have read in some posts that i have to do a “workaround” but It is a Concert Band arrangement with a lot of Alternative Parts. I hope someone can help.
Regards

Could you attach the attachment?

sorry, just did.

So what you want to achieve is to merge the multi bar rest to one single 16 measure rest with the ritardando displayed towards the end of it, right?

that’s right

If the ritardando would happen in the last three bars before bar 39, then Dorico would probably break the Multirest at that point.

I wouldn’t change this if you paid me.

I’m not judging but is there a particular reason why you don’t want the rit. shown at its rhythmic position for all to see?

I am not at the computer right now, but the first thing I can think of is this: Is there a way to hide the ritardando in this part only? If yes, one could try this and add a simple text and match it to the tempo text font.

Sorry, but as a player I don’t want to count 15, then another one. It looks confusing - it’s a 16 bar rest and should look like it.

Text will also break the multi-bar rest.

Each to their own :man_shrugging:

That is what I would call a “workaround” and it is a lot of work. I tried not to say this-but you can do it in finale!

A workaround is the only way here, unfortunately.

The point is this: Even as a player, I would want to know where stuff happens within the rest. (Especially here where the rit. is important to prepare for the waltz… )

And if, in rehearsal, just one time the director discusses the ritardando and one person asks “I don’t have one, where would it be, do I need it?”, you have comprimised their valuable time.
Please give everybody everything they could need.

I thought so.
Thank you all.

If you really must have a 16-bar multirest with a ritardando at the end of that, you could try attaching it to the double barline at the key change and then nudging it to the left in Engrave mode.

Sorry:

You can put the rit. as text or a Playing Technique (if you want to be able to have continuation lines) and it will only show in one part. And you could format it to match the usual tempo font.

However, it won’t be displayed in the score as your typical tempo font because it will be staff-attached.

The thing is, as a player you wouldn’t need to count at all. You see there is a ritardando one bar before the waltz starts - you will hear it - and you will be 100% safe, where to come in.
If it is notated as in your first screenshot.
