Bug - Horizontal scrolling broken in mix console window

In Cubase 12 you can position the mouse over places in the mix console window where there aren’t controls, e.g. the channel meter, then use the shift (horizontal) scroll wheel to horizontally scroll the mix console.

This seems to be broken in Cubase 13. That means the only way to horizontally scroll the mix console window is to use the tiny scroll bar at the bottom (unless you want to risk accidentally changing the volume faders with vertical scroll). This makes horizontal scrolling extremely difficult.

And while you’re fixing this, please make sure the shift (horizontal) scroll wheel also scrolls horizontally in the lower zone mix console.

P.S. It shouldn’t be necessary to avoid hovering over a control when doing a horizontal scroll. It should scroll horizontally no matter what you’re hovering over, but that’s another issue.

Hi,

Are you on Mac or Windows? Where do you place your mouse cursor exactly, please? Do you have the latest Cubase 13.0.41 update installed, please?

As I mentioned, the channel meter is an example of a place where you could hover to horizontally scroll the mix console. 13.0.41, MacOS 13.3.1.

Hi,

It works for me here on my side, Cubase 13.0.41, macOS 13.6.7.

I just checked it again. It works fine in C12 but not C13. Is there a new preference to disable it?

Hi,

There is the new preference, which disables the value change when using the scroll wheel. But no new preference about the horizontal scrolling in the MixConsole.

Ok, I see the problem. The vertical scroll wheel scrolls the window horizontally (which is what I assume you’re referring to), but the shift (horizontal) scroll wheel is now ignored in the mix console window in C13 for some reason. It works fine in the project zone of the project window though.

Steinberg really needs to sort out scroll wheel behavior in the mix console. Scrolling horizontally with the scroll wheel is a pain, especially in the lower zone mix console. Almost every other DAW has this figured out.

Hi,

What kind of mouse do you use? I use Apple Trackpad, which works.

as a sidenote, in past versions it was also possible to scroll horizontaly through the mix console with the mouse wheel pushed down, this also doesnt work anymore in Cubase 13 and is most likely related to the mouse wheel scrolling

I use a Razer mouse, but you can’t seriously be suggesting this is a problem with my mouse.

Hi,

So what you are doing is holding Shift + scrolling. Am I right?

I’m seriously trying out to find, what is the problem here.

Yes, otherwise known as Horizontal Scroll Wheel.

I already found the problem. It’s 4 posts up, beginning with “Ok, I see the problem…”

Never heard this exact term until now.

I’ve edited the post at the top to make that clear.

Ok, to avoid starting a new thread on exactly the same topic - horizontal scrolling works for me as described in Manual, but not in Lower-Zone MixConsole until I place my cursor exactly on the scroll bar (Windows 11, CB 13.0.41, Logitech M705 - simple mouse).

Is this how it should be, or have I missed something?

I mainly use Lower Zone Mixer and I am curious why it is deprived of this ability when the other Mixer windows can be scrolled horizontally with the mouse wheel according to the Manual.

Is there a reason for this in Cubase, or could it be something with my config?

Most other DAWs have sensible horizontal scrolling of the mix console using the scroll wheel. So, I would say that’s how it “should be”.

In C12 it was bad because you had to precisely hover over a benign part of the mix console, like a meter, before you could scroll horizontally with the scroll wheel. In C13 it’s broken completely.

Why Cubase has this ludicrously awkward way to do horizontal scrolling in the lower zone mix console is a mystery. No other DAW I’m aware of has this problem. Some days I wonder if anybody at Steinberg actually uses Cubase.

Can anyone test whether this has been fixed in C14?

Shift-scroll wheel should horizontally scroll the mix console, especially in the lower zone console. This is how almost all DAWs work, and it’s how most windows in Cubase work. The bug is only in the mix console window, where shift-scroll wheel doesn’t scroll the window horizontally and you’re forced to use the tiny scroll bar at the bottom.

MacOS C14: Hover the mouse over mix console except faders (say hover over meters, buttons, etc) and simply use the scroll wheel (no need for key modifiers such as shift). Works in separate windows only though.

Sure, but that’s not what this thread is about.

As I mentioned in the OP, and has been reported in many many threads, there are problems with using vertical scroll due to the fact that it’s all too easy to accidentally move faders. Shift-scroll is how the mix console should scroll since that avoids accidental fader movement and is consistent with how scrolling is done elsewhere in Cubase.

As I also mentioned above, the problem is especially acute in the lower zone console, where the scroll wheel doesn’t scroll at all.

In summary, mix console scrolling in Cubase is inconsistent, inefficient, and error prone. Literally no other DAW has this problem so it’s a mystery why Steinberg doesn’t fix this.

As I also posted here, on C14.0.20 the horizontal scrolling direction is inverted when you switch from the project window to the mixer window, and viceversa. Shrink stuff.

I’ve posted this comment also here because not only do i think it’s relevant, but as Steinberg keeps messing things up, it also appears that they don’t really read this forum a lot, so I hope that posting the same thing on similar threads could help visibility and awareness.
