Bugs in the audio controls for shared layers

Yes I meant layers (oops).
From the top down in a song:-

  • Global Layers are available in the entire project. You can show their settings in a Parts Layer but any changes you make are global. Effectively, showing Global Layers in a Part is a convenience - it just duplicates the controls for the Globals Layers. They can be automated by a Part using a Track.
  • Shared Layers are available in the Parts you put them into - they are the same VST instance underneath, but the Layer controls are stored for each Part, with the exception of things like the output routing which affects all of them. Any change you make inside the VST (e.g. the drawbars of an organ) affects every other shared Layer and you are warned of this when you create a shared Layer (though I think the message is misleading). If you change the VST in a shared layer to another one it becomes unshared and independent, but if you had, say, three shared Layers the other two would still share. Volume can be different between shared Layers but being as it plays the same VST it would not work in the way you want unless the plugin supports seamless switching and cross fades - I don’t think any of mine do.
My reasoning about the shared Layer volume control being the same: It’s the same fader just at a different gain.
  • Duplicated Layers are independent copies same as copy/paste. Or you can duplicate as shared - this happens in the current Part.
  • And then you can create extra independent Layers in a Part.
  • And you can share Llayers across songs! (I never realised it could do that)

Stacks follow the same paradigm.

My suggestion then, for you to have fades between sounds, is that you would have 2 independent Layers in each Part (or possibly you could use 2 sets of shared Layers) and automate fade up of one while the other fades down.

Or use a multitimbral plugin like Halion and automate the fades there.

Of course you could always use 2 Global Layers and automated them (volume, preset etc). Makes them available to every song and has minimal resource use.

Yeah there’s a lot of edits - I didn’t like the capitalisation
