Can I automate MIDI channel change?

I know this is probably a basic question, but that MIDI channel you can change in the track inspector, the one that is sent to the loaded instrument, so if you want to hear and record the instrument, both channels (in the track and the instrument) have to be on the same number or the instrument doesn’t play at all.

I was wondering if there’s any CC lane I can automate to tell it from here to here send channel 1, then from here to here send channel 2 and so on, that way I can load more than one instrument in Kontakt or SINE and have them play at different times.

Each note has its channel number attached to it. This is overwritten by Cubase if you set the channel setting in the Inspector to anything else but “Any”. Set it to “Any” and you can then tell each note individually to which channel it shall be send.

Not sure honestly, but maybe try articulations - you can define your own note articulations. You can define them to trigger a specific midi channel which is handy if you have a multi-channel library and want different variations of instruments for certain sections or notes.

The trick to getting them to work is to make sure the articulation lanes are showing in the midi window so you draw them in under your notes, but you can also set up control keys as switches.

You can either create a MIDI track and use the 4 optional “send” that you can automize:

Or use Halion Sonic, add instruments as you want and select the same MIDI channel for all. Then you can also use the “mute” automation:

I don’t know why you guys think so complicated when this is basic midi stuff:

Again, set the midi channel on the track to “Any”.
Use the Key or List Editor, select the notes, change their channel (in the Info line) to whatever you desire.

Johnny, you just taught me a world of new possibilities. Thank you, sir!
