Hello guys,
Im looking for a way to change the playback speed live while the project is playing in Cubase. The reason I want to do this is because when I change the speed while it’s playing, I get different variations of the sound, and I capture those live with another tool, something like changing the playrate while playing.
I tried changing the BPM while playing but it doesn’t really work. Any ideas how can this be achieved ?
Can’t be done in real time imo. You can use the tempo track do draw in tempo changes with ramps, and then render that
If you mean varispeed like on a tape machine…ie…you twist a knob left and the speed/pitch of audio goes slower/lower in realtime…twist the knob to the right and speed/pitch go faster/higher in realtime…
…I do that via an actual physical controller knob connected to my synchronizer/clock while my Cubendos are in slave mode to the master clock.
Works just like my jh24 machines. Instant, on the fly. And of course, just as on my tape machines, slowing/speeding the master clock (as with a dc varispeed motor) also changes the freq response etc at various non-fixed speed choices…as it should.
Now…if you’re looking for a realtime software up/down icon/feature within Cubendo itself to do that..no…Steinberg has (so far over the decades anyway) not been composed of software programmers who value the potential feature
I haven’t tried reaper for years, but as I remember, it does/did have a plain-view slider to varispeed audio. Right on its main gui.
I think I used to be able to kinda-sorta momentarily varispeed on Cubendo via the jog wheel…but you had to hold it in place or something (not useful iirc) ..and…I dunno if even that thing is still around. I vaguely remember it used to be part of the transport bar.
At any rate, I just use a physical control tied to the master synchronizer that clocks the daws to do varispeed…and I then often (as the op mentions)…run the varispeeded audio to an unsynchronized Cubendo for capture in realtime for various purposes.
Sound Forge Pro also has a custom-gui for their use of elastique that allows specific manipulation of a file…in clear varispeed terminology. Affected files can be instantly saved. The only drawback is that of course…you have to first load a file into SF to do it.
I own Wavelab Pro and thought (when I bought it) that it would do the SF varispeed thing…if it does…I can’t find it. Oh well.
Varispeed is historically a vital tool for me.
If Sb ever decides to add varispeed as a realtime control on cubendo..AND…bunches of channel-by-channel, track-by-track YELLOW vu meters (sized to FIT each channel sorta/kinda like Harrison)…to where Cubendo actually allows me to operate like I’m AT my console/tape machines…I won’t know what to do from the happiness
Obviously stopped holding my breath on that hope years ago
Thanks. I think I will use Reaper for that particular feature and then bounce back the audio to Cubase using Rolling Sampler + system audio loopback (through drag and drop across the two DAWs )
