So I’m active Dorico user but I also switch over to Cubase often too. I run into a frequent conundrum because their basic note moving/editing shortcuts are a bit different. For example: simply moving notes up and down.
In the key editor in Cubase, that’s simply the up/down arrow.
In Dorico, that requires a modifier key (alt+up/down) for diatonic (add shift for chromatic).
Diatonic vs chromatic aside, I was thinking of creating a universal shortcut for myself because my muscle memory will sometimes forget which program I’m in haha. For my sake I wanted to change moving notes up/down to match Dorico using alt+arrows (nevermind the question about chromaticism). I am not concerned of losing the shortcut for resizing tracks since I rarely use that and some sacrifices must be made.
I am also looking to consolidate shifting notes up/down by an octave, which is also different between the programs.
However I can’t for the life of me find this in the key commands editor window. I searched everything: transpose, note editing, key editor, move, nudge, pitch, etc.
Also I know Cubase key commands can be window-context-specific and worried that if I change anything in the key editor it might break a connection elsewhere in the regular arrangement view?
The easiest way to find the Key Commands is to trigger the function and then immediately open the Key Commands window. The last triggered function is pre-selected.
However, changing Navigate > Up/Down may have problems for the actual navigation of up and down.
It also doesn’t point me whatsoever to the movement of pitches within the key editor, which is what I’m looking to edit. I’m assuming this is not possible to change?
If the key command for what you want to achieve is not present then the Preferences could be another place to look. However, I think what you wanto to change is not changeable.
Update: I figured it couldn’t hurt to at least save my current keyboard as a preset and change Navigation Up/Down to see what happens, and if it breaks anything I can reset to what I had previously. I was just a bit confused because the category “Navigate” is not what I would think has anything to do with transposing and moving pitches within the key editor.
However changing this, it does work for what I was trying to do within the key editor. Also “add up” and “add down” represent moving an octave up or down.
However as suspected, this does indeed change the behavior within the primary arrangement view - now selecting events above and below use these same new shortcuts used in the key editor. I do find it weird that the selection shortcuts and transposition shortcuts are unnecessarily linked, but at least now I know.
I do appreciate that Cubase allows me to add more than one shortcut, so I decided to add both my new one and keep the old ones for Cubase. In order to match Dorico I lose a few track resizing shortcuts which I don’t use, so the sacrifice is worth it for me to go back and forth without the headache.
Sadly the shortcuts for moving notes up/down by pitch are totally different key commands for the key editor vs. score editor, which I use sometimes. Score places it under “nudge.” I observed this in the past because it’s driven me a little crazy that it’s not consistent. As far as I know there wouldn’t be a way I can make them the same.
