It’s pretty fair. Nearly all the soundfonts out there are version 2 or greater. It’s been around for at least 15 years.

Any sampler worth its salt can open a soundfont. Yeah, I suppose with all the variations of programs that can create them, mostly sample converters, there will be some that don’t meet the spec.
Well, I guess that I won’t have the choice to use a VST plug to run them in Cubase.
For now, there is only the bs-1 from Bismark (http://www.bismark.jp/bs-1/index.html)
that is both PC and Mac compatible.
The guys at http://www.digitalsoundfactory.com/ are now working on a Mac compatible version of their VX Player.
