Can VST Live Pro do all of this?

Hi,

I’m building a workflow for live performances and would love to stay in the Steinberg ecosystem as I am a long-time Cubase user. That is why I’m considering using VST Live instead of other companies’ products.

Because of the limited information about the software, I’m writing you here some scenarios that are part of the performance in hope that they can be done in VST Live Pro 2:

- Can a mic input(vocalist)track be sent to two mix cues sends/interface outputs - One to the vocalist’s in-ear monitoring, and the other to FOH? If so, can it be done without a delay between the two, or delay between mic and Songs

- Can sends & inserts effects settings on the mic input(vocalist) track be automated?

e.g#1 automatically change Autotune key and scale as Songs change?

e.g. #2 draw on/off automation so the reverb or delay is enabled only during specific lyrics/vocal phrases?

- Are there automatic Transport options like these and can they be triggered by Remote Midi:

e.g.1 Start song and play until the end of the Song and stop, and also Automatically switch to next song but dont play it, wait for me to press play when i want

e.g.2 Play song until a certain Part - e.g. end of Chorus 1 and stop, so the vocalist can say something off script to the audience, and then continue by pressing “play the rest of the song untill the end”

- Do VST instruments have snap Live Input to a specific scale, and if so, can those scales me automated to automatically change based on what Song is on?

- Can each Song have a dedicated Midi remote button for selecting/loading each Song but not playing it, just to load all the tracks, effects and instruments? For scenarios where i want to play the VST instruments for a bit as an improv intro, and maybe have reverb on the mic input. And then after that to press play and start the Song.

- Can Zones split a VST instrument on one side and Sampler track on the other side of Midi keyboard?

- Does Sampler track have record mic input to then be chopped and played as samples? If not, is there a quick and easy way to Create a Sample track out of a recording that is on the Audio track e.g. convert Audio event to a Sampler track

- Can the LoopMash effect be loaded on a Song and its settings be controlled via Midi Remote?

Thanks!

Hi! Have you downloaded the trial version already?

VST Live does the most you asked. Meanwhile currently:

No, PARTS are not supposed to behave like stop/pause markers, but you can insert an extra bar, or four and keep that bar(s) looping until you exit the loop. That might work

I don’t get this.

That is very specific, you need to try it

Now that you said that VST Live can do the majority of things I need, I will download it and try it out definitely.

Thanks for the answer.

Regarding snap Live Input: it is a cool Cubase option that modifies incoming Midi keyboard notes so no matter what note you play, the notes are “locked” to a specific scale that you choose. I think this is much more needed and useful in VST Live because you are performing/playing live while in Cubase you can always edit notes after playing and recording.

Just program it as two separate songs. The first half will stop for your ad libs, then footpedal start the second when your singer is ready. I’m not using VSTL any more - I’m doing this in Nuendo using the Arranger - simply create new arrangements in any order for different shows. If you need a lot of automation I’d check that out first in VSTL because quite frankly it’s incredibly frustrating - especially if you’re coming from Cubase where it’s so simple. I guess the workflow suits some people, but not me - give it some serious testing!

Actually, there’s a workaround to this, using two free third party tools, Midi Loop and Châtaigne.

The latter can work as a powerful Midi processor, though it’s just a part of its features.

In VST Live, create a Midi output routed to a Midi Loop virtual cable and call it ‘MidiProcessor’ for example. Create a CC event at the end of the Part you want to stop, on a new Midi Track connected to ‘MidiProcessor’. Configure Châtaigne to catch that CC and transform it to the keystroke ‘Space’, assuming that Space is the key that controls Play/Pause in VL (configured in Shortkeys/Actions).

Now your Song should be automatically stopped at the time your CC is inserted.

To resume playback, hit the Space bar or send the Midi message bound to Play or Play/Pause.
