Cannot save default text (paragraph styles)?

I cannot get default text to permanently save and restore to my preferred font.

I am aware of the issue where the star is grayed out after changing fonts, and you close the window and re-open and the star is available to be clicked. I have done this several times over with the font I would rather use. But with every new project which uses a different default text, I use the “refresh” button next to the star, and while this works for basically every other setting (including default font in font styles), within the paragraph styles menu it will invariably reset to Academico:

Please do Help > Create Diagnostic Report and attach the resulting zip file here, so I can take a look at what is saved in your user library.

Note that when you start a new project via the Create New page of the Hub, the fonts chosen on the right-hand side will be used, unless the project template you are using is a user-defined project template.

Try creating a new project simply by typing Command-N. This will create a blank empty project, and it should reflect your default settings.

Hi, all these years and I’ve overlooked the font aspect at new project creation. That is helpful to know.

However I have noticed that even after doing so, if I were to hit the “refresh” button in paragraph styles particularly, it still does reset to Academico by default.

My diagnostic report is too large for the forum so it says - here is a link instead - Dropbox

Thank you!

To be honest, I’m never sure what the correct combination of clicking the star and clicking OK registers the font change from an existing style either. If the setting is already starred, you can also just peek in your userlibrary.xml file and make the change there. That way you can be sure it is actually changed. Just search for Default Text and change the fontname and size to what you want in this setting:

After you’ve saved the file, restart Dorico, File/New, and your specified font should be active in that Paragraph Styles setting.

(It’s always a good idea to back up your userlibrary.xml first.)

One other minor thing which might be relevant while looking at my diagnostic report -

I have been trying to save a playing technique I created for harp - Normale - but to be written simply as ‘norm.’ - in spite of starring this numerous times, when I start a new project and add it as a technique, it always reverts to the old one, and there has not been a way for me to reset to default ‘norm.’ so I have to manually change it every time. Apologies if this is off-topic, just wondering if the diagnostic report is able to reveal why that might be happening. Thanks again!

In your user library, the Default text paragraph style is set to Nepomuk, which is I guess what you want. By contrast, the Default Text Font font style is set to Equity Text A. It would be more usual to have these two styles set to the same font, but you could of course have your reasons.

Your Normale playing techinque is defined to show the text Normale. If you want it to show norm. by default. Replace the userlibrary.xml file in your user-level application data folder with this one, and it should show norm. by default in new projects thereafter.

Hi, actually I want both set to Equity – and that is the issue I am having. I will star the default text paragraph style to Equity (after opening and closing the window) - and yet with other projects, hitting the restore/refresh icon to reset to default, will actually switch to Academico. I’ve also noticed if I switch Music Fonts with the selection to change other fonts as well, that paragraph styles will default to Nepomuk (which I don’t want), and then when I try to reset that to default (ideally Equity) – again it just goes to Academico.

However, in the Font Styles (Default Text Font) - no issues there - it restores to the correct default.

Thank you!

Is that even with “Update text fonts …” UNchecked? If it’s checked, you will get the text fonts that are in the SMuFL file for that music font.

Yep, I have tried both ways. Indeed, when I update the text fonts, I get maybe something else I don’t want - like say Times New Roman. Again in the font styles menu when I restore the “Default Text Font” to my saved default it will work as expected – but when I head over to the paragraph styles menu and do the same for “Default Text” - this will always restore it to Academico, which I have tried to save over as my default several times.

But if I don’t update text fonts when switching music fonts, this issue is the same. So in short, regardless I cannot get Paragraph Styles “Default Text” to save to what I would like it to for a default.

Here’s a version of your user library with Equity Text A set as the font family for the Default text paragraph style.

Hi Daniel,
I appreciate you taking the time to do that. Unfortunately it has not fixed the issue. I am wondering if a video of me going through the process step-by-step would be more informative than me blathering on about it:

Direct link if the video doesn’t play

Let me know if that is helpful and if you are able to reproduce this issue on your end taking the same steps. It should be noted that I have encountered this whether or not I have “update text fonts” selected when changing music fonts. Thank you!

Hover over it and you’ll see you are clicking the “Reset to Factory” icon, which resets it to Academico, the factory font setting:
factory

It doesn’t reset to the user default. I honestly don’t know why the Font Styles “Reset to Factory” actually resets to the user default but apparently these don’t work the same way. It seems like they should be consistent. I would think both “Reset to Default” and “Reset to Factory” icons could be useful.

OMG, I never realized that…! It is confusing though because after having made and saved custom user changes to instruments, playing techniques etc., that icon usually resets to my default in new projects and not the original factory one. I always thought that the star system basically overrides the default to user if you so choose, and that icon resets to whatever has been (most recently) saved as default.

So then I guess after all, the Paragraph Styles IS behaving correctly and Font Styles is not?

In which case that begs the question, even if Equity is set correctly in my xml as Daniel provided to me above, how can I get it to reset on say, old projects or templates etc? Is there no actual way?

In existing projects, you can use the Library Manager to harmonise settings with another project, with your user library, or with the factory library.

I believe I’m having the same, or a similar, problem. I set all my fonts as defaults with the star. All works fine. When I open a new file, the default text font settings in Font Style and in Paragraph Styles will not recall the font favorite settings. I’ve done this several times and cannot get it to stick. If I set the font and save it in a project, it stays. But any NEW project always defaults to an older font setting.

This seems to be a new issue because the font it reverts to is one that I saved as a default some time ago and is not the Dorico factory font.

When you do File > New to create a blank empty project, rather than starting via the Create New page of the Hub, do you see the expected saved paragraph and font styles?

No. And I just looked in the userlibrary file and I do see the correct font listed there. But in the font styles window it’s not correct.

When I hit the circle-arrow reset button in font styles, it does change to my desired font. When I do the same in paragraph styles, it reverts to Academico.

We’ll need to see your userlibrary.xml file, I think, and to know what fonts are shown for which styles in Font Styles and Paragraph Styles in a new project.

Here’s the userlibrary.xml file:
userlibrary.xml (205.5 KB)
And the font that is shown in both cases is Kalam:
