Can't change default audio output level

I am a new user, running the Dorico 5 trial version on a Windows 11 laptop. I imported a Finale xml file. The Default output level was -6.02dB so when I played anything I could barely hear it. I changed the default level to 6.02dB in Preferences > Play > Mixer. The default is still -6.02dB. I tried to select Play > Apply Default Output Level, but that option is greyed out. I can push the output up to 6.02dB in the mixer but I can’t change the default.

I opened a couple of the sample scores to check the volume on those. They both play loud from the start. The mixer output is set to 0.04dB. The Play > Apply Default Output Level option is available and can be selected.

The piece I imported starts out p. But that is softer than p in the Liszt sample. Could it be something in the Finale xml file that is making p so much softer? Could that also be preventing me from selecting Play > Apply Default Output Level?

Thanks.

Jerry

Welcome to the forum!

This default audio level setting only applies for newly opened or created project files. You’ll have to apply it manually or copy-paste to a new project.
I do think there should be an option around this, and with setting the default output to 0.00 instead of 0.04, but what’s the difference, really?

It is easier just to import flows from an old project to a new one.

Ah. Was not aware that was an option.

I created a new project and imported (File > Import > Flows) my other project into the new one. There is no audio. The mixer is defaulting to the max (6.02dB) but there is no sound through speakers or headphones.

You should re-apply your favourite Playback Template.

These are my choices. The selected one seems to be the default. I’m a noobie. What should be my ‘favorite’?

The selected one is OK. The choice would probably depend on whether you prefer the Iconica Sketch sounds over the HSO sounds for orchestral instruments.
(The others are included because they are the defaults for Dorico SE and Dorico Elements, which do not have all the sounds that are included in Dorico Pro)

Silence is a special template that loads no sounds (this can be useful if you want to minimise file sizes)

If you have NotePerformer installed there will be an additional NotePerformer Template.

If you use other sound libraries you will be creating additional templates.

If you’re not getting any sound from any project, that suggests that you might need to choose a different audio device in Edit > Device Setup. In general I’d recommend Steinberg Built-in ASIO Driver. Click the Device Control Panel button and check that an appropriate output is connected to the driver.
