Hi everyone. again, Im very new to this having come from Finale. Ive spent about 3 days typesetting 10 bars of music so far, with little success. But now Ive hit this new problem: Im just trying to add a note to bar 11 (screen shot below), the Caret and the orange beat markers won’t go into bar 11 for me to enter the note ! when I try it just jumps to bar 10 and then back to bar 12… and when I enter a note in ANY bar the whole system collapses into nonsense (second screen shot). It’s clear that Ive done something very wrong, any suggestions ?
Edit > The use of the “Ends Voice” property - or Edit > Remove Rests, which does exactly the same thing behind the scenes - is a bad idea if you only have one voice, as it means that there’s nothing for Dorico to space.
Turn off the “Ends Voice property” wherever it’s shown (presumably the last note in bar 10).
If you don’t want to show bar rests in empty bars, use the dedicated functionality for this, which is the tickbox at Library > Layout Options > Players > Bar Rests and Multi-bar Rests > Show bar rests in empty bars.
It looks like you’ve remove all the rests from the bars, which is going to screw things up.
Go to bar 11, and enter the Bar popover (shift B), and type ‘rest’. (Another option to Leo’s advice above.)
Also, I wouldn’t add System Breaks before you’ve entered the notes. Let Dorico do the spacing, and then put some Breaks in at the end, if necessary.
If you’r really struggling with Note Entry, make sure you’ve watched the many videos on the subject on YouTube. I’d also recommend working through the First Steps tutorial, before embarking on a real project.
ah, thank you this might be the answer, much appreciated !
good advice, thank you. Yers, maybe I need to go back and re-do the basics, thought I had enough info to get started…
If you want “empty” bars to begin with – that is without default bar rests – you can switch them off here:
EDIT: I see @pianoleo has already mentioned this - sorry Leo
Thanks, but how do I hide the rests in bars without the bars collapsing ? In the example above Its clear that the first notes are repeated for the duration of the bar, so the rests would not be necessary. Is there a way of ‘hiding’ them ?
Ive just re-typed the whole piece without hiding the rests (as suggested), but simply can’t find a way of making them (visually) disappear without the bars all collapsing.
I’m not sure I’m following you: the bars only collapse, if there is absolutely nothing in them, in no voice, but otherwise. So I would fill the bars with all you want there, and THEN hide rests. But maybe we talk past each other here?
Yes, I tried putting the rests in and then ‘hiding’ them using the ‘remove rests’ function, but that made the bar change width (not entirely collapsed). The method I used that eventually worked was reducing the size of the rests (to 1%), that meant the bar stayed the same width. It’s a bit of a work around though….on Finale all I had to do was press ‘O’.
Could you post the file, or a part of it showing the point in case?
Another possibility would be to just enter place holder notes, suppress their playback (if this matters) and hide the notes by hiding noteheads/stems/ledger lines.
