Can't open .m4a files

For some reason I can’t open .m4a files. It used to work. Now I get “Special File format” window. Any suggestions?

Using which WaveLab version, and 32 or 64 bit version?

Wavelab 7.2.1 (build 600) 64 bit thanks PG!

m4a files can only be opened with WaveLab 32 bit.

Aha! Right you are. The 32 bit version can open them. Thanks PG!

I’m using only WL 64 bit in Windows 7 64 bit. I don’t even think I have Windows Media Player on my PC. When I click on the .m4a file nothing happens.

Can anyone suggest a free .m4a to .wav converter?

iTunes or Foobar.

Thanks bob99.

Funny…I can’t open a .m4a file in either Wavelab 8 32 or 64 bit!

You need to install quicktime.

Okay got it.

For Wavelab 7 32 bits install Quicktime.

For Wavelab 8, according to your other post in the Wavelab 8 forum it will not work in either 32 or 64 bits?

Wavelab 8 is like 7 here: you need to install quicktime to open aac files in 32 bit.

The Solution that worked for me after many hours of trying was to install Quicktime Alternative:
windows10download[dot]com / quicktime-alternative / download[dot]html
Sorry cannot place linx here replace [dot] with , and remove spaces. Or search w. Google.
The Codecs from this software work not only for Wavelab but for about any program needing Quicktume codecs… :grinning: :grinning: :grinning:
System Win10X64, Wavelab 7 latest version x32,
I hope this will help. Greatings From Holland, Igor (Former Steinberg Support Manager from the Netherlands)
