Can't Record cc11 Track Data

I am new to Cubase. I previously used Sonar and Reaper to create music.

I purchased a Sparrow 3 x 100 external cc fader and am having a difficult time getting the device to record an automation track for the selected instrument track.

The device is connected and setup as a remote MIDI device. The faders in the on screen Cubase MIDI Remote device move when the externa; hardware faders are moved, but I cannot record cc data to any track.

There is probably some steps I am missing to get this working, but I cannot see them at this time.

Perhaps one of the Cubase experts (long time users) can enlighten me on what I might do to resolve this.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe someone else knows a trick for getting a device like this to deal with both the MIDI Remote Device functions and recording MIDI CCs. However, when I was trying to use my own MIDI controller (Roland A-800PRO) that I use for both MIDI input and remote control facilities, I was having a similar problem, and I eventually just decided I’d dedicate the first eight faders for MIDI controls (programming the controller itself to send the specific CCs I wanted) and use the last fader, transport buttons and knobs for the remote control functions. That leaves me with only one fader for track fader use (only for the track with the focus, no bank of eight tracks), but it was rare for me to use multiple track faders at the same time when I initially had them all configured for remote control anyway. (The bigger challenge was figuring out how to set up the CCs I wanted and save them on the device across powerdowns.)

Hello and welcome.

In short: You don’t need to use Midi Remote for this. The device should send the midi CC data to Cubase where you would simply record them directly onto a track.
Usually this kind of device comes with a little software that lets you chose exactly which fader should send which CC.

Hi Johnny

Thank you for the tip. I removed the MIDI Remote device, but I still cannot seem to record CC data into a simple violin part. I see midi cc curves being added to the main track event, but it has no affect on playback.. I am also confused on how to see these recorded cc data in separate lanes below the MIDI recording. Selecting “Show used automation (selected tracks)” does not seem to do this.

If you can be so kind as to list the steps I should be using to create an instrument track and record cc data using the attached fader device, I would greatly appreciate it.

I would probably start here.

This is good, and it means that CCs are being recorded.

This is bad, but not totally unexpected. It is a matter of configuring the virtual instrument to respond to that specific CC if we want it to have an effect on the sound.

Automation is something different, there’s no need to go there yet. To be able to see multiple CC lanes, follow the link I posted above. Roughly speaking, you need to press the [+] sign (down there where it usually says velocity). This adds a new controller lane. Then, you click on the Button (e.g. Velocity), and you choose which CC you want this lane to show.

If you settle on a view that you like, for example Velocity, Pitch-Bend, CC1 and CC11 all visible at the same time, you can make a Controller Lane Preset, so that you don’t need to do this task constantly.

Edit: Do you have a specific virtual instrument in mind? What exactly are you trying to control?

Thanks..I’ll try this
