Cantai… expectations?

I visited a choir rehearsal at Lwiw Music Academy - it must have been 1994. They had a skinny guy in the bass section, who produced the most amazing sound - I wouldn’t have been surprised if the roof had been lifted. He might have even sung an octave below, I don’t remember. I do remember that when he had to leave early, the choir sound sort of collapsed.
I hope the building is still intact.

It must have been here:

no, we are not at all in disagreement. I expect to have a professional bass in a professional software no? or otherwise not naming it ‘bass’ but ‘bariton’ within the software. I bought cantai, assigned my bass singer to it and I can’t hardly hear low ‘F’ and ‘E’ notes…

And those notes are ‘pitchy’ and a bit out of tune

If you haven’t done so already, you might want to try the new Ottetto Choral Basses of Cantai 3.0.0 for Dorico. They are massively better than the previous ones.

One of the ways I am trying to have Cantai pronounce certain words correctly is to spell the word/syllable phonetically and then hide it or color it white. Then I create the correct spelling of the word in text formatted as lyrics and erase background and position it over the phonetically spelled word. But for some reason the actual lyric is not completely hidden, either because its z-index puts it in front of the text or because it does not stay hidden.
I expect this is in the Dorico ballpark to solve, and I would request a solution as a feature request, perhaps a z-index property or some other way to obscure the lyric with the text field.

… and be able to hide syllable hyphens and extender lines as well!:grin:

I’ve just updated both Cantai and Dorico and am enjoying the Ottetto voices - thank you!

However I’m having a problem with assigning Cantai instances with Independent Voice Playback:

  • The Cantai Playback Template isn’t attaching every track to instances of Cantai, so I need to assign manually.
  • The list of IVP tracks is large (even for an SAB piece with a few divisi and solos)
  • he Cantai “Choose a Part” dropdown won’t let me scroll - so I can’t see all available parts!

There are related issues here that are on the Dorico side:

  • Independent Voice Playback makes some blank tracks that have no music in them (e.g. Divisi staff B retains all the voices that Staff A had, even if they are never used)
  • Dorico needs a way to manage voices in a staff, including deleting unused voices

Thanks for your help!

Alex

So, in assuming that you are using divisi creating the need for Independent Playback, I do not believe that Cantai is yet capable of handling divisi voices at all. It has been requested and it is on their radar.

I am using Independent Playback as a workaround for divisi, yes - and Cantai does sing both notes because they use separate instances. Dorico 6.2.3 introduced this possibility. However, Cantai isn’t yet capable of divisi on the same staff, which would be so much simpler.

Can you post an example file?

What do you mean with “divisi on the same staff”?

Maybe you are not talking about this, but at least “standard divisi” works and plays back here just fine. SATB written on two staves (SA-TB). Independent playback enabled. Dorico 6.2.30, Cantai 3.0.0. Windows 10.

Sorry, I meant divisi in the same voice on the same staff. e.g. the sopranos have two pitches on the same rhythm for a few beats, which typically would be notated in the same voice. Cantai can’t handle those yet.
As far as I know, it should be able to handle singing two voices - and divisi staves.

Here are examples where I’ve used 2 voices on one staff to allow Cantai to sing the divisi. Typically I wouldn’t want the stems up/down.

Ahaa, thanks for the clarification. :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m setting it up exactly this way, except that when I need to choose a Part I can’t scroll to see all the options! Dorico is making more Independent Voice Parts than are needed, I can’t delete any, and Cantai’s automatic selection is sometimes wrong.

I haven’t had the chance to test this situation yet, but it seems logical that if the lyrics are assigned only to one of the two voices, Cantai would have difficulty with the other.

I wonder what would happen if one assigned lyrics to each of the two voices. It would be unsightly, but would Cantai then be able to sing both parts?

Thanks for the report. We’ll look into it.

I’ve opted to write “dummy” tracks and add a stave where those splits are. It works fine (there are some other problems, but the split track part works fine). I can hide the tracks in score view so that isn’t a problem. This ALSO allows me to change the spelling of certain words where I don’t like the pronunciation. By trial and error a really good pronunciation can often be achieved just by weird spelling. For instance, “baa-ther” might be a good way of spelling “bother”, because cantai interprets two “aa” as an ah sound - at least it does with me.

Maybe try writing “aa-men”.

as I said at the time of @SteveMain 's post I find aa-men or u-men both usually work depending on context. There’s been quite a lot of discussion on this one elsewhere such as the Fb forum too – the main debate seems to be whether Cantai should use the European or US pronunciation. As for

in theory my approach as well, though I seem to be getting too lazy to do just now – if someone is going to sing my stuff, I’ll make a fair copy of the few words I need to change at the time.
